Whether I am online or not, my hard drive makes a constant "tick tock" sound like something is running....any ideas what this is or what I should do??

Hi bolaur, Welcome to TSG!!

My best guess would be the drive is going bad. How old is it?

I'm going to move your thread over to Hardware.

You need to remove these in control panel, add/remove programs:
New.Net, WhenUSave or Save and SpyKiller, unless you have the paid for version.
If new.net is not there go here and follow procedure 4 to remove new.net.
http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html

Reboot and post another HJT log.

This may not take care of the H/D so do you think it's still under warranty?

I just removed New.Net, couldn't find Spykiller and am now trying to remove SaveNow but it won't seem to work....If I hit Ctl Alt Delete...it saves removing SaveNow. Should I just be patient??

HD probably not under warranty.

As well, on the bottom tool bar, a pop-up comes up that says "$ Wait". I can't pull it up and when I right click & delete it, the whole uninstalling SaveNow process quits.
After a reboot, I did another HJT:

You should check the mfg web site for diagnostic software and check the drive to see if it's going bad.
Do you have a burner to backup your data?
Do you have room for a second hard drive in your box?

By mfg should I presume it is Dell as that's what it says on my box?
I have an external burner but don't have any idea how to back up nor do I know if I have room for a second hard drive in my box.

If you have a Dell go to their web site and put in your serial number to see if you still have a warranty. The web site calls the serial number Service Tag. You can find the serial number on the bottom of your machine if it's a laptop or on the back of the machine if it's a desktop.

No, not even close. You need to Put a new folder on your desktop, copy the my documents folder into it, then burn it to a cd. You can then put the info from there onto a new drive. You also need to , if you are using Outlook or Outlook Express, export all info to a .pst or .csv file in order to reinstall them back into the e-mail programs after install of new HD. Depending on where you saved things on your old HD, there may be other files and folders you might want to copy over to cd also.

If the drive just started making this noise, it's either some application accessing it, or it's dying. Some drives actually do a thermal recalibration periodically, and it's normal operation. Hard to know without more details about exactly when and where...
