Unhappy DVD-writer drive not working and need help
Last year on December,I've bought a Samsung DVD-writer SH-W162C and followed the instructions in the manual both in the product box and online web manual.I even installed the bundled software(Nero) that came together with this product as well.

But, I'm experiencing problems with this drive. It would not read or write the contents in the CD or even DVD. The company(Samsung) offered quite a lot of troubleshooting and told me that I should update my drive using the firmware, of which I did but still the same situation or changing some registry in the PC, of which, I would not do it as it can cause unpleasant effect on the PC.

The OS I'm using is Windows XP,Pentium 4(which is recommended). It can recognise the drive but would not work. I do not know what is the problem and run out of possible solutions to it.

Can you suggest any more solutions?Plz reply ASAP.

What appears in Device Manager for the drive? Is there an error indicated for the DVD drive?

The Device Manager shows the name of the name of the drive(TSSTCorp CD/DVDW SH-162C) and the status of the drive(the drive is working properly). It did not show any errors but the drive is not responding well when putting CD or DVD in the drive.Any other idea?

Did you try uninstalling the drive in Device Manager, and rebooting to detect it again?

I'd suggest trying the drive in another system, that will isolate the failure to the drive or the computer.

What do you mean trying in another system? last time, I send my drive to the vendor who sold this drive to me and tried it in his computer, It work it's magic and even managed to write or read any files in the burned CD.

That is why I don't understand why is not working in my PC but it works in the vendors computer.Any more solutions??..

Did you see him test it? I guess I'm a skeptic, it sure sounds like a drive problem. I'd have to see it work properly in another machine to be convinced.

yes,me n my dad saw the person doing it with our own eyes.seen the installation and that drive works well.I have only one PC and felt that it could the problem with our drive or the config. or anything.

What do you think?..anymore solutions?

P.S.Don't mention about registry. I'm afraid of doing minor changes as it can have undesirable effects on my computer. That's what one technician or somebody from Samsung suggested to me.

Well, you told us not to mention the registry...

Let's try something different. Can you boot from the drive? Put a bootable CD in the drive and see if you can boot from it. I'm trying to find out if the hardware is functional here.

If you are worried about editing the registry just back up the registry key you are going to edit or if need be, back up the complete registry.

This link explains the whole procedure;

If you are going to back up the complete registry read these instructions for adding the backup utility to XP Home.
