Laptop Battery Trouble
My Thinkpad R51will not charge the battery. I have found out that nothing is wrong with either the battery or the charger, because when I put my battery in another laptop I can charge it and then my computer can run off just the charged battery. Also, with another working charger my computer will not charge the battery, so somehow my computer will not simply not charge. Any ideas?

Have you made any changes on the laptop. Done anything in the bios? With laptops the charging circuts are inside the computer.

I don't think I've done anything. I don't know what the bios is. But I haven't really messed with anything.

The reason I asked about the bios was because there are some settings in there that may have been changed.

Here is a good read on what is inside a bios setup utility. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/f...name=c00034791

It sounds as though you may have a motherbord issue though.

Everything that I have read about this and there is quite a bit out there most people have had luck replacing the battery or the cord. You have already tried this.

Most of the others were forced to send theirs in to the shop to be repaired due to faulty charging circuts on the motherbord.

Perhaps some one else will have a better answer for you as I have not worked on Laptops much other then changing out a few parts.

Found this at the IBM site. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...GR-51038#notch

Battery does not charge
Check the following:
Is the AC adapter plugged into the wall outlet and connected to the ThinkPad? If not, correct the problem and continue.
Does the wall outlet have power? Some wall outlets are connected to a switch, or the circuit may be open because of a blown fuse or circuit breaker.
Does the AC adapter power the ThinkPad without the battery? If not, the fault may be with the AC Adapter or the ThinkPad itself.
Is the battery too hot? You cannot charge the battery when it is too hot. If the battery feels hot, remove it from the computer and allow it to cool to room temperature. After it cools, reinstall it and recharge the battery. If you still cannot charge the battery, it will need to be serviced.

I just got 6 laptops (IBM R51) to set up for a workshop. The batteries were all completely drained and weren't charging. I tried everything. Finally, in desparation, while they were up and running on AC with the Power options up, I unplugged the battery and plugged it back in. That started it charging for a few seconds then stopped, so I tried it again and this time it continued to charge.

Hope that helps.

Sounds like the charging circuit in the laptop.
