#51 | Oh boy, I can hear it now.......Hot deal on a new Dell laptop!!! prices have been burned to the ground!
Actually its not really a surprise that a battery can explode, car batteries have been known to go up, some guy could have plugged the adapter into a 230v and had it switched for 115v (or whatever it is in Japan) there may even be some kind of warnings in the manual. In other words its probably not the pc itself its the battery. Lappies do get hot after all, maybe it was in a puddle of Sake.

While there may be steps computer manufacturers could take to improve safety, replacing lithium-ion batteries with an equal alternative is not one of them. It's the best technology available today, and a replacement is unlikely over the next 10 years. | | Junior Member with 15 posts. | | Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Scotland Experience: Wicked on hardware - decent on most other stuff |

#60 | Pity to see so much anti dell sentiment here. A balanced view would be a nice change.
Shame your blaming the wrong people.
The japan incident was a li-ion bat catching fire - it was in a dell.
But the cells within the battery were manufactured by Sony, who supply the same faulty cells to - their own laptop division, Apple, HP, IBM.........
What you should be wondering is why it took so long for Sony to let the system builders know that there was a risk, and then why only dell immediatly setup a mass recall at massive cost worldwide. | THIS THREAD HAS EXPIRED.
