"immediatly" LOL DELL was aware of the battery problem for several months

"a mass recall at massive cost worldwide"...Again LOL. Only when the news exposed the problem to the general public. Hard to hide your failings on the WWW once it's been exposed. Bad news travels fast.

DELLS are junk and Sony plants root kits. Two companies I'll have nothing to do with..

Give me a break. You don't do an immediate recall just because you have a handful of batteries catching fire

Dell is going over and above what they really needed to do.

. . "DELLS are junk and Sony plants root kits" . .

Actually, Dell makes very solid and dependable systems . . Are they overclockable? . . NO! . . Are they easily upgraded? . . Not really, although newers ones are easier to upgrade than the older ones.

Do they fit the needs of 90 % of PC users . . Absolutely! Are they good value for money . . Absolutely!

Still trying to figure how Sony installs root kits from thier batteries . . . that's a new one on me.

this was from an article on Dell

"It's kind of what HP has just risen to, yet the perception is that HP is on the mend and Dell is in decline,"said Kay."What people forget is that every day Dell is selling lots of computers to lots of people _ and they're not blowing up."

You still have to do damage control.

1. All of the news media jumped on this because it's a sexy story.
2. Find me a juror who a) can grasp any of the technological issues and 2) didn't see or hear about the laptops gone nuclear.

I don't know if Dell's product is defective or if the batteries are defective, or both. Dell's problem is that the news programs show DELL computers on fire. Now Dell laptops have 15 seconds of fame and years of infamy.

I am an independent Dell rep. This issue hits me in the wallet.

Meanwhile, I'm right in line coming up with Dell jokes....

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) will recall 1.8 million lithium-ion notebook batteries after nine devices overheated, causing minor burns in two users, U.S. safety regulators said on Thursday.

For several weeks before Apple began the voluntary exchange program, reports surfaced on several Web sites about "bulging" batteries in some MacBook Pro systems. The bulging was so severe in some instances that the notebook casing was bent out of shape.

Apple to recall 1.8 million notebook batteries
Recall is second-biggest in U.S. history involving electronics or computers

SAN FRANCISCO - Ten days after Dell's record-setting notebook battery recall, Apple Computer Inc. told its customers Thursday to return 1.8 million batteries that could cause their Mac laptops to overheat and catch fire.

Both recalls involve lithium-ion batteries made by a Sony Corp. subsidiary in Japan, where the manufacturing process introduced metal particles into battery cells. Makers of battery cells strive to minimize or eliminate the presence of such particles, which can cause computers to short circuit, or, in extreme situations, catch fire.

In its recall announcement, Apple said it has received nine reports of lithium-ion battery packs overheating, including two cases in which users suffered minor burns and some involving minor property damage. The Apple recall only applies to older notebooks — not the just-released MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

Sony and PC makers scrambled on Thursday to reassure customers that the latest battery recall involving Apple Computer would be the last.

Of course, that's exactly the same thing they said last week after Dell announced it was recalling 4.1 million batteries that could short-circuit and cause a fire.
No other PC company had reported the level of incidents that Dell had seen.
