Acer, IBM and Toshiba if you want to stay away from SONY and Dell.

I guess it will depend on what you want to do with it.

Apparently the failure is in the way the batteries were made.

Quote:
The fires have been caused by "rare" occurrences when microscopic metal particles that have been forced into the battery by crimping machines may cause the battery to short-circuit
Of course we all know short circuits, and battery acids, electronics, electricity can easily = fire.

To me my disgust is still not an issue of brand as it is an issue of product safety and public knowledge. To me its much more disconcerting to know the companies knew about the defects way before it came to main stream media. What does it take us as a people to get outraged that companies know about defects and cover it up rather than address it? I bet its safe to speculate if we had not gotten large world press on this issue it probably would not have resulted in what we are seeing occur today with all the recalls.

On the other hand look at Baush & Lomb, they got crucified because of an apparent problem with their contact lens fluid, turns out people were just not being sanitary in the contact lens handling methods, so you cause a panic, products are ripped off shelves, millions of doallars in the toilet, a reputable company gets their name smeared all because of a bunch of yahoos that dont wash their hands after they wipe their butts.

Yeah . . lost of floks were ragging on Dell when they stepped up to the problem . . seems just now to be recognized as a bigger issue than just Dell. . . but I suppose it has cost Dell some sales.

LOL I wasn't implying ALL companies do that and in fact I applaud Baush & Lomb for taking the initiive and doing this even though it wasn't their product causing the problem. In fact if more companies cared more about people I think we would see alot less of the shoddy consumer goods that get churned out these days. But alas its all about the mighty $.

Well it wasnt to B&L and what did they get for their concern?, in this current environment where folks are sue happy, the infamous "the coffee is TOO hot", etc. I'm not sure i completely blame companies for trying to keep stuff out of the media, but where it can involve personal safety, etc. companies do have to come forward. hopefully B&L's quick response will be rewarded some day by people becoming customers again.

i can see watching, various court programs, that there are many people out there that feel nothing bad should ever happen to them and if it does they are going to sue somebody, anybody to get a handful of cash out of the deal, its a disgusting trend. i dont know if its a world wide phenomenon or just the USA, but apparently, this entitlement mentality has become so ingrained that anything bad or unfortunate that happens in the course of everyday life is cause for a "money grab"

These are Li-ion batteries -- they don't use acid, just cobalt and lithium with some carbon and organic solvents. The problem is that lithium is extremely unstable and will burn if it comes into contact with air, even at room temperature. The batteries have numerous stabilizers and safeguards, but physical shock, short-circuiting, or overcharging can break these down and cause the lithium to combust.
