I don't know if this is the right forum for it but...

I was wondering if there is any problem with placing a subwoofer on top of my PC? It's a pretty small sub and doesn't vibrate so much but I was just wondering if anyone knows of any problems with this?

Should be OK, if it vibrates enough to worry the PC then the neighbours will probably appear with baseball bats anyway.

The magnetic field from the speaker will not affect the HDD, but if you have a CRT monitor, make sure it's not too close to cause colour distortion.

I think you may get resonance with the case, I'd be more inclined to put it on the floor.

The reason I don't want to put it on the floor is because I live above someone and I don't want to disturb them. I assume the vibrations may bother them. What do you mean by resonance?

well i would be worried that you will vibrate screws loose ram sticks and pci cards may work loose etc., not really a good idea, why dont you just keep it turned down a little....ya hippie...with your dang rock-n-rool music

get a cement block or something heavy to put it on under the table.

A pendulum is a good example or resonance.
It continues to swing .. at it's natural resonate frequency .. long after you push on it.

Are you guys really sure the magnet wont affect the HD or CD/DVDs ??

who are you? Vincient Price , nah I wouldnt risk the whole vibration, magnetic field thing.

My sub would seriously bother someone below me if I lived in an apartment. I can go to the basement and heard it clear as a bell before I moved it. It has the power to rattle pictures on the wall. (Pioneer HTP 200-SW)

Okay, what I'm getting at is on my TV furniture that houses the TV, sur. sound. receiver, CD changer, cassette deck, VCR, etc. There are two shelves about an inch from the floor designed for speakers. Since I have my speakers on the wall, I put my woofer atop one of these, which almost completely eliminates hearing it from below and doesn't effect sound quality.

The wood is on four tiny pegs, this may work for you to build a small thing to set it on.

I wouldn't risk the vibration on the PC to state my opinion.

Go to the local hobby shop, and get sheet cork - like used for model railroad track beds. This stuff kills vibes and cancels out resonance.

I just checked the little pegs under mine, they feel like cork or something somewhat soft, so I'm betting that'll work

I would not put the subwoofer on the tower. there are other ways to baffle the sound from going down.

it might take some tinkering.

cork, rubber or foam rubber. anything will help.

If you have it up loud enough to annoy the person living below, then a visit from someone with a baseball bat with a mild suggestion to turn it off is highly likely.

Resonance or not, it will be bad for you if not your computer.

Perhaps you might consider headphones instead?

I do recall my younger days when I cranked it up.

So I can relate.

Actually headphones are a quick trip to ruining ones ears but that is another issue.

Just having a little fun here folks. If you really care about the neighbor then talk to the person and do some tests. I still crank it up now and then but before doing since i live in a house i will go outside to see how bad it really is first.

20 years ago i would have just cranked it up but now I would rather see how bad it is
