When I power-on my dial-up system, the printer is the first device to power up. The computer system power-up requires me to manually push the power-on button in the front of my desktop, and what I describe below happens before I pwoer-up my computer system separately.

After changing the black cartridge recently, the printer insists on printing out an alignment page after every power-on. The instructions with the "Start Here" guide indicated first inserting the black, then the color cartridges in that order. So, after initially replacing only the black cartridge, I followed the procedure by re-placing both in order. Same result.

In essence, even after performing the alignment procedure (successfully) on every power-up, it still insists on printing out the alignment page. It did not use to do this on power-up. Now, to avoid printing out the alignment page, I hit the Cancel button on the printer as soon as the alignment page starts to print and at least save one page from being sacrificed. The printer is stable in this state while the computer system is booting up.

Anyone experienced this problem and solved it?

I have a model 1310, and recently changed the black cartridge from the original that came with the printer. I am experiencing the EXACT SAME issue with the alignment page. It really pee's me off! I never shut off the printer now

Here is HP's reply. I have not yet tried it yet, but two things are clear - when I tried to realign the cartridges:
1) I may not have aligned the alignment page to the front corner of the glass, and
2) I definitely did not have the the printer unconnected to the computer, although the computer was not powered up - I suppose that must make a difference the way HP implements the USB cabling hardware/software to the alignment process.

Winbob, let me know by posting in this thread if the following procedure worked for you:

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Disconnect the USB cable and the power cable from the
back of the unit.
3. Plug in the power cable only to the unit.
4. Print an alignment page.
5. Place this alignment page on the scanner glass (Steps to place the
page corectly are given in the web link given below).
6. Press scan button on the unit.
7. Turn the unit off and switch it back on after 10 seconds.
8. If alignment page is not printed, then connect the printer back to
the computer and start the computer.

In case, it prints an alignment page once again, follow the steps 1 to 7
once again.

NOTE: During all these steps the unit must remain disconnected from
the PC.

FWIW .. If that doesn't work ..
If it were me .. I'd remove Image zone and try a reinstall.
Unless you use Image zone (which I refuse to) .. during the setup, there should be a choice to install all of it ..
Or just the basic install .... I use the basic ... This applies to my PSC 1610 setup.

When I has having problems with my image zone (another subject) ....
HP sent me a complete IZ removal tool (program) .. I lost the link .. You may ask them.

By any chance .. Do you have the M$ IE 7 update installed ???
It's know to cause other problems with Image Zone.

The procedure as posted in #4 worked for me. After powering everything down, I turned on my power-strip which then proceeded to print out the alignment page. Unconnected the USB from the back of the printer, aligned the cartridge - this time placing the alignment page toward the front corner (instead of the back like last time when it didn't work), powered down for 20 seconds, powered up and the alignment page this time did not print!!! Powered down, reconnected the USB cable to the back of the printer (no need to unconnect the USB from the computer), and powered up - again NOT printing out the alignment page!

Thanks for the extra HP web page link for other printers - I'm sure that will be useful to others that have a similar problem.

I have not used IE7 as yet, and my XP is down for the count - I'm using Ubuntu Live CD 6.0.6 LTS (Linux variant). This problem is strictly a printer problem and has nothing to do with either IE7 afaik. When I installed the printer on WinXP it just worked ok - don't even know if I have IZ.

That's good news.
You should be able to run the scanner using Windows Camera n Scanner wizard ....
If you want to avoid HP's IZ problems.

Personally .. I use Irfanview to run my HP Scanner.

Thanks a bunch...I used the procedure on the Link provided and it worked. No alignment pages printed.
