If you are saying that you have to hit the power supply switch and the front switch on the tower at the same time to get results, I would suspect that the "power on" switch on the front of the computer is not making good contact when pressed or that it is sticking. Try unplugging the wire leads for the front switch from the mobo and use a paper clip or small screw driver to momentarily short the corresponding pins on the mobo and see if the computer boots up normally. If it does then you know the problem is with the switch, it's wiring or a bad connection to the mobo. In addition, some mobo's have an option CMOS setup to set the power off/on functions for the switch, ie: soft power off, 4 second delay, etc.

Good luck.

Why would the bios need updated when nothing was added hardware wise? I'd say ram or mobo.

just got here and had to tinker with it to get it to turn on-installed the Everest and there are the results. I'm rebooting and ding chkdsk then memtest- i'll post back soon with results.
I said update the bios because of this:
A couple months ago I had a problem with my new motherboard where it wouldn't go from PIO mode into any UDMA mode at all. So i updated the bios, but the update would only stay when I restarted the computer, when I turned it off and on it reverted to the original. It was pretty much the weirdest thing I've ever seen. Anyway, I don't know if you understand how that relates but it makes sense in my mind.

Nothing needs to be added hardware wise for the bios to go to crap. Have you even reset the bios yet?

If you want to bash suggestions I would like to know how the hell doing a chkdsk would do a thing?

yeah when I saw the voltages I thought the same thing. thanks though. As for the memtest- it ran for 2 hours and no errors.
Kilowatt- It's not the switch, cause after hitting the switch on the front and only the front you can hear it work and boot into windows, you just can't see any of the bios or windows screens. Once it gets into windows you can hit the powerswitch again and it will shut itself off. SO I know the PSU is good, ram is good, and front panal switch is good. It's not the video card nor the monitor/cables cause I've used theirs and I've used mine. So MOBO, right?

Sorry Jackie- never heard of the BIOS "going bad". Only needing updating when you add hardware. But I will do that as a last resort.
I could try removing all but needed items and booting- see where that puts me, maybe the something is pulling more than it's fair share of power? or crossing a signal? Im out of ideas, anybody else?

electrical surges (such as shocks) can mess up the BIOS chip.

makes sense, I just never had that happened nor heard of it. (keep mine clean)
So if it's not the BIOS- then what is it? I'm thinkin they will have to just have to live with it till a new one. Which they are thinking of.

correct- currently running off of a AGP video card. I also tried 2 others- 1 AGP and 1 PCI- both did the same thing.

yeah, at this point I'm pretty sure we can say it's a bad motherboard.
It's a good thing computers got a whole lot cheaper over the winter.
