Intermittently Sound Disappears
Intermittently the sound on my PC (XP) disappears. When I start Media Player, it tells me there is a problem with my device or it doesn't exist.
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."
The volume controls are all greyed out. If I delete the sound device in device manager, the device will re-install fine and be usable, but the next time I boot, it may (or may not) be usable again.

Do you have your motherboard cd? If so,try reinstalling your audio driver

If not,use the following program to post back your mobo and chipset details..

I reinstalled the driver from the Dell support page.

I've also isolated this problem to when I reboot -

Also - not sure if this is relevant or coincidence. Concurrent with the appearance of this problem, every time I boot, I get this error message -

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services encountered a problem and needed to close.

I was directed to a Microsoft Support page to install the Hotfix KB927891 which I have - which didn;t fix either problem

Try reinstalling your chipset driver....rebooting and then reinstalling the audio driver

If you dont know it, use the program above and post back the mobo and chipset details which are listed under "system summary"

Sound Drivers Disappear
Hi
I have a similar problem with my fathers computer. He is running XP as well, and sound has started to disappear at random times. I have reinstalled the drivers several times now, it will work fine for a few days and then they disappear again. It does not seem to happen consistently. Any ideas?

Did you reinstall the chipset driver?...and if so it must be 1st and then rebooted before installing any other drivers

same sound driver problem
hi,
i have the same problem starting 2 months back. i first noticed the problem when i tried to edit my video files, my individual video files can produce sound in software Canon Videoimpression, but the final edited video file has no sound. Still cant solve the problem.

The on-and-off disappearing of my driver also take place whenever I open up iTunes, an error msg popped up to indicate that there is problem in audio configuration. Sound got disenabled after that. I stopped using iTunes for a while since.

Just half an hour ago, I open up iTunes and again lose the driver, so i went through the process of reinstalling the chipset and audio drives using my CD. Sound came back but again when i activate iTunes, no more sound.

I'm currently using Lenovo Y400 and I have soundmax driver and XP home edition.

Help!

I'm having a problem with NO sound. Have had the problem for months, nothing I have done has repaired it.

Here is my PC info

I cannot seem to find the driver to reinstall for my multimedia controller, as that is the only device that is showing a conflict.

Hi,

Have you tried the dell support site? If not, click on the link and select drivers and input your pc details and it will give you all your drivers

When you tried reinstalling the drivers, did you reinstall the Intel i915G chipset driver? If not, follow the link and download the chipset-then reboot the pc and then reinstall the sound driver
