New sound card installed
hi all

Ive just brought a brand new Creative X-fi soundblaster Xtremegamer 7.1 card

Running XP Pro an completely removed all old software for previous card. shut down then plugg new card in.

I reboot and the loading windows screen just hangs with the blue bar frozen.

I remove the card and i can load back in ok
Anyone got any ideas? It's brand new the card.

cheers

Try putting the new sound card in a different PCI slot if available, or switch places with an already installed card.
Some cards a picky about IRQ assignments.

cheers for reply

Still no luck though. Ive tried all 4 PCI slots and same problem. Only way i could install drivers was by booting in safe mode and then installing, but on re-start it the loading screen hung again. all this is after a fresh format i done the other day. I don't have any experience of configuring IRQ slots but i shouldn't have to di this should I?

I tried the card in another pc, similar spec and works fine

Any other ideas? ive treid eveything I know

Hey,

It sounds like a possible IRQ (Interrupt Request Line) conflict, which is basically a line that voltage is placed on so hardware can grab the attention of the CPU. The easiest way i can think of is to install the drivers in safe mode and whilst you are there go to device manager (Start > Run > Type "devmgmt.msc" and press enter, then on the new screen choose view > resources by type.)

From here click IRQ and then list all the numbers that are written twice or more, paying particular attention the PCI - it's likely that there is a yellow marking next to the culprit.

Nick.

Cheers for that Nick.
Fortunately I didn't have to go that far and remembered about clearing CMOS.

That seemed to have done the trick

Cheers guys
