Just an update:

I called Palm's Corporate Office today to express concern over the missing part and the missing serial number and the suspicion I have that someone in the Pharr, Texas repair center may be less than honest. The conversation was lengthy (appx 20 minutes) during which the rep pulled up images that were made at the repair center of the Palm I sent.

He said there are sensors inside the Palm that turn blue when exposed to water. If I understood him correctly, there are four of them. He said he could see no indication of blue on any of the sensors.

The evidence seems to be even stronger now that there is a snake in the woodpile at Pharr, Texas.

good to hear. I would suspect Palm to be generous in a new PDA...

Just an update:

I called Palm's Corporate Office yesterday to express concern over the missing part and the missing serial number and the suspicion I have that someone in the Pharr, Texas repair center may be less than honest. The conversation was lengthy (appx 20 minutes) during which the rep pulled up images that were made at the repair center of the Palm I sent and that was supposedly water damaged.

He said there are sensors inside the Palm that turn blue when exposed to water. If I understood him correctly, there are four of them. He said he could see no indication of blue on any of the sensors in the photograph they made of the inside of my unit. Since the stated purpose of these photographs is to document the condition, it is strange there is no blue showing on any of the four sensors.

The plot thickens.

It seems the further I get into this thing, the more I am convinced that either there is a thief in Pharr, Texas or the Pharr, Texas repair center is riddled with incompetence. But, the stripped serial number makes me strongly lean to the former, especially since too many people have good experiences. I think there is a bad apple in the barrel.

I got my replacement Palm and after a couple of days' use, it seems to function perfectly.

In looking back over this fiasco, I shudder to think I would have been out $300 had I not been observent enough to notice the suspiciously light weight (the missing battery) and the missing serial number.

hell yeah, my gateway notebook is a perfect example. I knew it was a crappy product when i bought it so i got the 3 year extended warranty. Since then they have replaced the heatsink twice, battery 2x, motherboard twice because the a/c adapter (female side) soldered to the motherboard went bad and they are lazy so they just gave me a new one mb. All repairs took less than a wekk and a half. Yay Gateway!! Ill still never buy another one though

LOL now that is funny....You wonder what ever happened to the old adage "the customer is always right" It seems in this day and age you have to be knowledgeable about the product and ready to fight to the bitter end to receive any type of proper compensation...So sad this is becoming the norm not the exception...I had the same type of problems with asus , one Doa Rma motherboard and 3 weeks of frustration before finally getting a totally new product in replacement...But not after staying on top of the situation and monitoring them...(they almost sent me the wrong product)...

That was a good eye, and most likely Palm will look into your case more.

Well, it worked fine for a while and then began to give trouble again:

Problem 1: It would hold a charge for days or even a week or more and then would sporadically and without warning, discharge itself completely in a couple of hours

Problem 2: The touch-screen sensivity began to shift for items near the bottom of the screen. I had to tap about one-eighth of an inch below the intended target for anything within about a half-inch of the bottom of the screen.

Problem 3: It became necessary to do a soft reset just to turn on the Palm. This wasn't consistent, but rather sporadic and would happen even when the battery was in a fully charged state.

I shipped the unit back to Palm on 07/18/2007 and received my "repaired" Palm TX back from the "repair" center on 08/01/2007. Every problem is now just as it was before it was shipped--still broken. I also got the usual "please visit our web site and let us know how you like our repair service" e-mail. Of course I gave it as negative an answer to every question as I could--not that they really care.

I called Palm in California on 08/02/2007 and they are supposedly sending me an advance replacement.
