Solved: USB Flash drive
Hi there,

I have purchased a USB flash drive which states on the packaging that it is Vista compatible - the device does not come with CD by the way & alas it 'cannot install drivers, please visit manufacturers website' displays when my Vista Premium attempts to locate drivers.

I have tried the device on an XP system & there were no problems with the compatibility & it installed drivers instantly. Unfortunately I'm unable to find the flash drive's manufacturer web-site as I was hoping to find relevant drivers there.

The device is made by Technika, it is the 4GB SGH-4096 model & am wondering if anyone here has the driver I could have to install.

Many thanks.

Thanks for quick reply BigBear - The driver would you believe is for Windows 98 only! I downloaded & tried them from there & after that I tried a Vista driver search within the site but even on the Tesco site there is no mention of Vista drivers anywhere.

Thanks for your info i'll try to keep searching.

Drivers for usb mass storage devices are native to XP and Vista.
Try booting with the device attached

Hi Bigbear,

Have rebooted as per your last reply but unfortunately to no avail. The original error returns as per my 1st post, thanks again for your assistance.

Have you tried anything else in the port to see if the port is working OK?
Otherwise I would take it back and get a replacement, maybe try a better make

This is the technique I developed for fixing XP USB errors, it probably will work as well for Vista USB handlers, I haven't had the occasion to try it. Make sure you create the restore point in case I'm wrong!

First step, Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Create a restore point and name it something like "Before USB Fix". This is to bail you out if something goes wrong during the following process and makes things worse.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG

-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------
REGEDIT4
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"

-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify the instructions.

Take a look at http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vi...b-drivers.html and see if that may help.

I found that Nokia Suite and Bluetooth Stack were the culprits.

Have tried the suggestions as above but unfortunately none remedy the prob, but the one resolution that has fixed this prob for me was to install manually as per detail written in RandyG above article link.

Many thanks to all who replied to my query here to help me resolve this issue. Naturally it'd be nice if Vista did automatically install the USB drivers by itself but doing this manually has fixed my prob & enabled me to get on with my computing needs.

Thanks again,
braz
