that's weird- same problem, same computer, same time frame!
About 4 weeks ago the screen started becoming skippy...then Norton Anti expired...I uninstalled and black screen. I turn on and you hear the fans and the click of the hard drive. I tried hard drive on another machine and it works. I tested Ram and it was ok...I tried a video card and it wouldn't even accept it...I have an e-machine 2.8, 512ram and xp home edition... 6100 on board nvidia .... I am stumped too... Does your machines Fan slow down or keep at a high rate of speed? As the Fan normally slows down after it posts into windows.

Like to hear what you came up with.

I have the exact same problem
I have the exact same problem! Did either of you guys find out what was causing your issue? (i.e. gfx card or mobo?)

I've had a Geforce 7800GT PCI-E card for around 1 year, and it has always worked perfectly. However, today I started to have problems (I haven't made any changes to my PC's hardware setup).

Here are the symptoms/things I have tried:
  • I am experiencing an issue in which I do not receive ANY picture from my graphics card (the monitor says that no signal is detected).
  • The issue is somewhat intermittent. Out of 50 attempts to boot my pc, one attempt did yield success and I was able to get a perfect picture from boot all the way into Vista. The moment I rebooted, I again received no picture...
  • I've checked to make sure the graphics card is not loose, and that the power cables are correctly connected + the graphics card fan is going around
  • I've removed the battery from my motherboard, to reset the cmos.
  • I've removed all non-essential cards/hardware from my pc (i.e. disconnect dvd drives, took out sound card, extra hard drives, etc)
  • I've tested my monitor with another computer, and it works fine
  • I've used remote desktop to connect to the machine after it's booted...and I can connect succesfully, the only problem is that I get no display on my monitor.
  • I do not receive any beeps on boot (i.e. the mobo POSTs fine)

So my question is...does anyone have any ideas what the most likely problem could be? I'm guessing either my graphics card is dead, or my mobo has a problem....but i'm not sure which is most likely. The fact that I do get a display occasionally (about once every 50 attempts at booting the machine) might indicate that the graphics card is ok?

Thanks,
Dave

Yes, Mother board was fried
This is a common issue with this type of computer. Replace mother board with a cheap(but decent) acer board and away it went...running like new. I ran many tests and could only find everything leading back to mother board...I did some research and everyone with this type of machine was posting same problem ... and almost every case the mother board was replaced. COST$ 90 to $120 bucks for a decent mother board...if you can install yourself(free install), or should only cost you $40 to have a tech do. Sorry if this doesn't help you... Norton is a guilty program...but in this case E-Machine is the guilty bad mother board source ... !

daveuk2 you need to post your problem in your own thread. When you have a problem please start your own thread. The reason for this is that with one problem per thread, it is difficult at best to follow what has/has not been done; with multiple problems per thread it is impossible.

Found the problem!
After months of saving up money I built my own computer. But to figure out the problem what I did was use all of the old parts of the E-Machines computer, and replaced them one-by-one with the new parts to see which part was messing up. Once I did that I found that it was a defective hard drive. I had replaced the motherboard, RAM, video card, CD case with better cooling system, speakers/sound card, and processor. The last piece that I replaced was my hard drive and it happened to fix the problem. So if you ever encounter another person with this problem please let them know to check the hard drive first. By the way I just encountered another problem so please check my newest topic. It involves a power failure. Thanks to all so much!
