Solved: XP Divers
Hi

I have recently purchased a dell inspiron 1721 at work, I need it for editing videos so it was a nice spec. It came with Vista but my company do not support the OS (Wales NHS) so they put XP pro on, as standard.

However, the video driver would not work, after contacting Dell they tell me the laptop was built for vista and there are no XP drivers available for the ATI RADEON Xpress1270 card.

I have avid liquid 7 which isnt compatible with vista so I am stuck.

Does anyone know of an XP driver for this card ? or maybe a way around the problem ?

Cheers

Gus

PS its drivers not divers doh !

Hiya Gus,

You could try and download this utility direct from the AMD website onto your laptop. It will determine if there is an available driver for XP that supports your mobile Radeon and lead you to it. If the manufacturer won't provide a driver, in most cases you can get it directly from the source instead.

You should be able to use the ATI Catalyst Drivers directly from ATI.

I just noticed that that download has a game demo with it also, if you go here you can get just the display drivers.

The drivers off the ATI site may work anyway even though the X1270, the X1200 series is supported so maybe try the Integrated/Motherboard Radeon drivers off the ATI site: http://ati.amd.com/support/integrated-xp.html . But for those that aren't check out this ATI driver mod utility: http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/ to mod the driver and add greater card support.

Is this system set up by Dell with a restore or repair utility from Dell as part of the hard drive? Jazz

Hi

There is no restore disk, there was a partiton on the hard drive to restore Vista. The I.T. dept wiped this out when they installed XP, they had to buy vista to allow me to put it back on.

Everything that came with the laptop is vista, it has a cd to install every driver needed for it.

I have tried and tried with different drivers, the suggestions above and I always get the same message "We cannot find a suitable driver for your system" The guy at Dell said the laptop was built for Vista so I guess there is no way about it.

I wil re-install vista and try to work a way around Liquid 7, maybe use another laptop in the department.

I cant use it on my PC as there is no firewire port.

Cheers for the help

There is a lesson here for all of us. If you're advising clients about new PC's be sure to tell then that when they choose the Vista OS, they may not be able to use any older software or hardware.
Having the latest and greatest is nice, but it can be costly.

Did your workplace place restrictions on what you can do or install on the computer?

So far as your pc goes if you have an extra pci slot the firewire cards cost anywhere from 15 to 30 dollars and work great. Having worked with video for years, I can tell you I have never had any problem with the use of the card versus built in. (It might be an option that helps.) Jazz

I don't know if you've tried this but here's how another guy got around the issue:

" Just bought a dell inspiron 1521 with the ATI Radeon 1270 chipset and sigma tel sound card. I configured to dual boot windows XP and Vista. Like you I lost many XP dirivers and was frustrated by Dell tech support. Here was how I solved the problem. Nobody tells you but the Dell latitude notebook D531 ships with the same ATI RAdeon 1270 graphics and sigma tel sound, yet runs windows XP ! go to Dell tech support page, choose download drivers, select latitude notebook D531 and then select windows XP operating system and search for drivers. Sure enough a downloadable driver pops up for the ATI Radeon 1270 and audio drivers. I put them both on my Dell 1521 and they run perfectly in windows XP. I get sound and good video, and the device manager recognizes them. I am not a techie but this took me 12 hr of internet research to figure out and it works fine on my dell."

http://www.driverheaven.net/mobility...ss-1270-a.html

It might work...Your not the only one suffering with this issue apparently. Let us know...Jazz

I have tried to install this fix on a clean install of xp.

I tried to do it on my home pc and had exactly the same message ?

@ Jazz3000 I might wel get a card and fit it in my pc. My company (NHS Wales) use Dell as their supplier and to order a card off them would be costly, so I might do it off my own back.

I seen the thread about the 1521, I will give it one last go and wil get back to you to let you know.

thanks for everything all I am very appreciative.

Gus

PS this could be promising as I have seen this thread before somewhere but it said "Inspiron 1531" not the latitude, so I thought the guy was mistaken as the inspiron 1531 does not have radeon 1270 drivers.

the latitiude does so I am going to download them and try them, prob is I put vista back on this morning but it wont take long to load XP

Cheers

PSS does this mean all the drivers for the latitude 1531 will go on my laptop ?

Gus
