Installed new 3 1/2 floppy..doesn't work??
This new internal floppy lights up and shows up in device manager, but when I put in a disk it gives message in my computer that I need to install a diskette....I tried several disks with same results..It is a generic replacement drive on an XP system

Is it the original cable? Different drives seem to have very different cables.

If it "lights up" continuously, you have the ribbon cable on 180° out.

Check BIOS setup, too, to be sure it is enabled.

I used the original cable and it is notched so it can't be plugged in wrong...It only runs solid when I put in a disk....I will check in bios, but device mgr finds it and says it is working

.
better check it real close,
the notches i've seen were never really big enough to prevent it,
or even on the power plug either,
and,
do you have just the connectors on each end of the ribbon,
or are there a couple,
like for a b drive also or even a tape unit?

I checked the diagram that came in the manual...the red line is positioned correctly...if it was 180 out, it would light up all the time..also, I twisted wire is on the drive end of the cable like the old drive...

Well if you replaced an existing drive that had worked then maybe the new drive is just a dud.

power connector problems. double check that the 4-pin floppy power cable is inserted correctly and firmly.........if that doesn;t make a diff, swap a spare PSU 4-pin floppy power cable to the drive.

(the red edging of the floppy cable is *usually* furthest away from the power connector. not adjacent to it like an ide hdd cable)

Thank you Daniel....I don't have the 5.25 connector..it ends with the 3.5

Rob...the power connector will not plug in inverted because the plastic plug is secured one way..I am going to try a new ribbon cable first....thanks
