Talking Laptop Dead!!!!!
I need some help here. Yesterday I was installing Avast on my laptop. While the program was scanning my entire system for issues, from the boot-up screen, my laptop just shut off. It's been known to do this before, especially right in the middle of something important, of course, but now the damn thing will not turn back on! The power light goes on, I hear the fan going, but nothing else. Windows will not open. Actually, nothing opens in the computer... My screen stays black, no power to usb's or network card either
Is there a way to boot this thing up? I am totally lost here.
This was posted in the security/spyware section already in hopes of getting a reply from someone.
PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP........

Thank You, MB

Do you have a Windows OS disk you can boot with? What version of Windows do you have?

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I do have a disc. I have WinXP. Do I have to reinstall XP which means I'll lose all my data in my laptop? If so, is there a way to get all the files off my hard drive before I do this?
Thanks again,
MB

So you have the WinXP OS disk. You need to boot your computer with it. You can insert it into the CD/DVD drive and see if it will boot automatically. If not you need to get into the CMOS by pressing the Delete or F2 disk at boot time and changing the CD/DVD drive to boot before the Hard Disk.

Let's presume you have booted the WinXP OS disk and you can see a display. Let Windows load all the drivers etc and eventually you will be given some options. Choose the Repair option and type chkdsk /f/r at the command prompt and Press enter key, let it finish then reboot computer.

If you are getting no display in CMOS or with the WinXP disk then something is seriously wrong and you Laptop may need repair.Try doing what I've said then let me know how you go on.

Thanks for your reply. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I tried everything you mentioned but nothing worked. I thought for sure it was dead... So I decided to take the thing apart. I pulled the hard drive out and the memory out, did nothing special with them, put them back in and BAMMM it's working again. I have no clue what happen. All I know is that it's working and that's fine by me. Again, thanks for you help.
