just put a new computer together for someone and it's all hooked up and powers up just fine, but i get no signal to monitor. i've taken the video card out and put it into my computer and the card works fine in my computer. then i put my video card into the other computer and i get nothing. seems like i might have gotten a bad motherboard?

new system:

did you go into Bios before installing windows ??
I know when I set my ASUS Bios up it had (AGP) under graphics cpu high-lited. switched to pci-e.

how old is the Bios version on board??

Try putting a different video card in the new system...

Also, disconnect all drives and devices from the mobo (mouse, keyboard) - just the monitor cable... if still nothing, pull 1 then both memory DIMMS out... if the mobo is alive, it should complain.

the cpu is plugged in and i just made sure the 4 pin was plugged in on start up and got nothing =( unfortunately i haven't made it to the bios screen yet

i just tried starting up with only the monitor hooked up and unplugged my hdd's, optical, and floppy drive and got no picture, so i pulled out a stick of ram after startup and still got no response

Pulled both sticks... unplug the video card too. Does the CPU cooler fan even spin?

Check the mounting of your processor cooler. Socket 775 processors will not POST unless there is at least 17 (f/lb) of pressure on the processor heatspreader. Are you using the standard Intel cooler? If so, reply in a post and I will post instructions on how to reset the cooler which may solve your problem.

Also which processor are you using. Post the sSpec number if you know it.

i am using an intel e8400 processor with its provided heatsink and fan (i'm not using any thermal paste)

i'm am fairly positive it is in fact it's the cpu causing the problem

i took my mobo out of the case set it on cardboard with only the gpu, ram and processor plugged in and when i power it up i get no beeps. i then took out the ram and got 3 beeps. i know the video card works cause i hooked it up in my comp and it worked fine so all that is left is the processor.... right?

how do i reset the cooler?

The E8400 processor is not compatible with that board.

also if you tell retailer that you didn't apply any thermal grease if it didn't come already applied
probably voided the warranty on the CPU chip.

does you monitor have manual buttons on it??
see if you can at least get the monitor to display a diagnostic screen or settings screen.

ahh didn't think i'd need thermal greese, i didn't use any on mine and it runs pretty cool at no more than 42C

James, I believe if the processor is not supported by the board the poster will either need to get a supported processor, or a different board.

The boxed processor comes with a thermal pad pre-applied to the cooler heatsink.

I'm having this same problem with my Dell Dimension 8400 with an Intel Pentium 4 processor. It's 4 years old and has standard everything. Could you, by any chance post the instructions to reset the heatsink??? On another thread we've just about narrowed it down to the heatsink for this problem.

I would be SO pleased to know what I'm doing before I attempt to pull it apart.

Dell uses a different type heatsink than the type the original poster had. You may be able to find information on how to reset your heatsink here;
