Keyboard and Mouse not working at Power up
Hi:
I have Compaq Presario S4040SE with XP Window
Keyboard and the Mouse have PS/2 connectors

Last night the Mouse stopped functioning (arrow on the screen not responding to the Mouse movement). Follwing are stepped I took.

1- I turned off (hard turn off, couldn't use Start Menu to turn off because neither the Keyboard or Mouse were functining).

2- Turned the computer on, I heard several beeps, hear sound of fan running at high speed,
computer didn't go throught its Boot Up routine and screen remained blank.

I repeated steps 1 and 2 several times, same symptoms again: computer beeps several times, fan (microprocessor fan I think) runs at high speed, screen remains blank (no Boot Up steps displayed).

Now, when I disconnect the Keyboard and the Mouse and then turn on the computer, the copmuter goes through the Boot Up routines and display them on the screen ast it normally does.

Appreciate your help and suggestion

The beeps at startup are a code. Look in your manual for what they mean. Or take a look at this site, or this site. You do need to know what brand of BIOS you have in your computer.

I checked the manual there is no mention of beeps code or BIOS type.
How do you check what types the BIOS are?

I am trying to find another Keyboard and Mouse see if there the same problem with the.

Click http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html to download SIW. It's free. I recommend the standalone version. No installation required. Just download and launch.

In the left pane, under Hardware, click BIOS and the make/version of your BIOS will be displayed in the right pane.

The problem is I cannot get the computer going, the Keyboard and the Mouse don't response. Once I figure this thing out I'll download your recommended software.

Thanks for the suggestion

OK... How many beeps are you getting when you try to start the computer. Listen carefully, there may be some short and some long and even a pause between beeps. Be as precise as you can.

Just for your information, a normal startup will have 1 beep after POST. At least that is what I have observed with every computer I've operated.

I replaced the Keyboard and the Mouse with a new Keyboard and Mouse (Optical), things look all right now (I hope).

I tried the old keyboard and mouse on another computer, it too couldn't go through booting up and its screen remained blank, so keyboard or mouse should be bad. However, I tried the old keyboard and mouse separately with my computer and still got the same symptoms (no booting up and blank screen), I can't believe that both the keyboard and mouse went bad simultaneously.

Now I can download the software you suggested for identifying BIOS and other system information.

thanks again,

Djamshid
