Why don't you and your mate switch cards. If it works fine in your mates, did you try your mates in yours?

why when you do have a solution from HAL356???

you say it works fine in your Mate's computer.
your Mate has been helping you do a lot of Tear Down and Rebuild.
this isn't fun.----
your Mate hasn't been charging you money for all the work has he/she??

give the card to your Mate and go buy yourself a new one
different brand please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this will be your good deed for the day

Well I would just suggest put the "Creative xfi" card off to the side, and I would suggest that you try a new sound card (brand new, and make sure you keep the return, so if the new card still makes a crackling sound, you can always return it). I would recommend getting a totally different brand, so you will be able to pinpoint if it is INFACT, the card itself that is making the noise. Since everything has been replaced in your computer, (including the motherboard, in which I see no problem in getting a BRAND NEW CARD), I would suggest that it is in the configuration of your hard drive. Since you updated your motherboard, did you update the CPU also? What version of Windows are you running.

Sorry if you have said any of this before, I sometimes have the retention value of a drunken mat.

What Jamesx121 said.

Even though I observed that you and your mate have the same exact card. So just put it off to the side and go get a new one (not meant to be rude). And make sure if the new one makes a crackling sound to return it immediately. Get into a position to where you will be able to put in and take out. Put everything back together (NOT INCLUDING THE CREATIVE XFI SOUND CARD), and go to the store, come back, put the new card in, turn on the computer to see if everything works. If it doesn't, just take it back out and return it ASAP.

I would go get a new one but I'm going to be broke this month and next month, being on SSI you are on a fixed income,

and Yes I have updated the CPU, I read the creative forums, they say this issue has been known, and the only real fix is to exchange it for a higher end one, or lower end then the xfi, but the problem is, I'm well over my return date and I spent all that money on the card it was over 100$ USD.

Is there any way that you can have access to another sound card? Like, is there a friend, or a friend of your mate that can loan you one for like a day?

I'm using my very low end soundcard, Cobra "AOpen" Soundcard. the 15dollar brand, works great, but sounds like Sh!t >.> mind my foul lang.

As for ebay, Ya. I wouldn't touch ebay with a 10foot pole, I have bought a few things off of ebay and never got them, and reported it, and never got a response, I never did like ebay, it works great for the people who help it get more money but if your just some low end folk using it for very little, don't expect much, thats what I came to learn, i'll just put a ad in Craigs list

Sheesh this has gone on for a bit - BTW - not a furry, that's just old TC as my icon

As for the crackling and popping, I'll tell ya, it sounds almost like a problem that occurs in laptops that have their power jack soldered to their motherboard - they get so hot that it melts the solder and starts arcing. Have you checked if you have either - (A) good solder joints at the base of the PCI jack, or (B) a CRACKED PCI jack? I mean, if the card works in the duplucate motherbaord but not yours, it's gotta be somewhere in the connection, right?

Okay, wait here for a second, did you say that your Cobra "AOpen" sound card works without the crackling noise? (Besides bad sound quality)

Ya think the driver for the Cobra might be interfering with the big card? 'Course, did you ever disable those drivers for the Cobra?

Okay - last silly question from me then - speakers or headsets, how close is the nearest cell phone or cordless phone? Cell's cause screeches like that as well, especially if they are high powered ones that have multi functions and (worst yet) walkie-talkie functions, as they will send a regular pulse out to make sure that the antenna sees them at all times. A test for that would be to take your machine and see if it does the same noise in your mate's room.
