Lightbulb Solved: freeze frame (and it's not J. Geils)
Hello everyone! I've recently run into a problem repairing an older custom built system. it's a p4vmm2 board and recently the computer power supply burned out. They called me and asked me to replace the power supply and I did so but there seems to be some additional problems.
The computer freezes during boot at various stages. it rarely gets to the windows xp boot up screen but even if it does, it never gets into windows. my first thoughts were that the onboard video had burned as well so I swapped in an AGP card and bypassed that and received the same results.
How can I be sure if it's the motherboard? I feel as though I've narrowed it down to this but who's to say?

Thank you!
RW~

It's possible the mobo is gone. If the PSU has surged, it could have caused irreversible damage to any number of pieces of hardware.
The first thing i'd try is to boot the pc with a known working hard drive, then if that doesn't work, i'd say you're looking at a mobo problem.

I would try to install Windows on another hard drive...looking at the board do you see any bulging capacitors or any foluid oozing from any capacitors...also after removing psu and replacing, do you smell any burnt smell inside anymore?

nothing noticeable on the board~
and no scent of burning anywhere except in the power supply unit. pulled everything I could and looked around. replaced the hard drive and still the same scenario. doesn't lock up in any one place. it happens if I'm able to boot into bios setup or if I allow the system to boot clean.
p.s. thanks for taking the time to reply~

thanks, Mud77... fairly convinced it's the mobo somewhere. just not convinced it's cost effective to mess with replacing it.
