Why is my GPU running a lot hotter suddenly?
I have a Nvidia 9800 GX2 with no overclocking done. I have it set at 80% fan speed. I used to have GPU1 below 60 at 58 or 59, and GPU 2 in low 50s.

Now, I know its now summer, but I don't see how it would raise it that much, though I don't know much about computers. It is now running at 66 degrees, it keeps going up every so often.

I thought it would be dust, but I can't see much dust on top of the card and I've wiped it off several times.

What should I do as I plan on overclocking probably to 650 core which will increased temps but I don't want it running at 80 degrees idle or anything.

Also, on my GPU, could I place an 80mm fan on top of the fan area of the GX2 to push air into the fan area to help it out? Would this hurt it or help it, or would it do anything?

How can I setup this spare 80mm to it can do something?

Thanks.

the reason why its running hotter is because to cut costs the 3rd party who makes the card cheaps out & uses a low grade gpu fan not to mention low grade memory depending on what price you pay. also the occiasonal temp. jump is expected. depeneding on how cramped your box is & if it has decent airflow and how often you dust the inside of your box

If the fan is still running the same as it was previously, then the manufacturer using a 'cheap fan' shouldn't cause a difference in the GPU temp. If it was insufficient, it should've been insufficient from the beginning.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the summertime heat is all that's causing the difference. What temperature is the room your computer is in? Is it air conditioned? What kind of load is it under when it's running at 66 degrees? What happens if you bump it up to 100% fan speed?

Well the third party I'm using is EVGA, I thought they were good.

The room is not air conditioned, but it isn't that hot either. The temperature here has been fluctuating every day for w/e reason. Right now it is 23 degrees C in the house but it was much hotter yesterday, I'm using my other PC right now because I'm gonna get my 200mm fan installed.

I have a case that I'm assuming has good airflow, Its an Antec 900. I'm putting the 200mm that was faulty in the top today and yesterday I installed another 120mm on the side panel to push directly on the GPU. The GPU fan dropped 2 degrees because of this.

It really doesn't look dusty inside my case :|

When it was running at 66 degrees it was idle, no load at all. When under load like Crysis, it got up to about 88 degrees-90 which I really don't like to see, though I don't know if this is supposed to happen.

I do have a lot of stray cables everywhere, I'll try and tie them back so they're not interfering with anything.

I was wondering about the 80mm I have, where can I put it so it will help things out? I saw someone who had place a 120mm on top of the fan area of the GPU and another 120mm below it, attached right to the card. Could I do this with just 1 80mm on top?

Thank you for your replies.

After installing the 200mm it dropped the temp on GPU 1 to 60 at idle which is good for me.

Still, any idea where I should put this 80mm?

When it comes to fans, more is not always better. If your system is running fine and getting good air flow, I'd let it go and be happy with it.

You mentioned that it was a lot hotter than 23º yesterday. That's definitely hot enough to make a noticeable difference in your video card temps. And all the fans in the world won't help a video card that's in a room that's too hot.
