continuing frustration with BSODs (mainly Vista x64)
so it continues...

today i started playing BioShock in Vista x64 (to play it with the dx10 bells and whistles). i upgraded to the 175.19 nVidia drivers as i like to have the latest drivers.

within the last hour, 2 BSODs. the first one was PFN_LIST_CORRUPTED with no driver mentioned. the second BSOD pointed at dxgkrnl.sys. i have read on the nVidia forums that this is an issue with 8800GTX's. i have a 8800GTS and though not the same it is similar.

one of the solutions they had on there was to disable a Creative X-Fi sound card. but as i have onboard Realtek HD Audio this is not an option for me.

i have tested memory using memtest86+ and Vista's memory tester, not a single error at all.

i am at a loss as to what is causing this. i have tried everything from running with 1 stick of RAM, running with all 4 and running with just 2. i have cleaned out the dust in my case, i have scanned for spyware/adware/viruses (and beyond the normal cookies, found nothing invasive), i have tried older drivers, newer drivers, and a HDD scan. the problem persists. it mainly occurs when gaming though it has happened on occasion just in and around the desktop too.

it is beyond frustration and beyond ridiculous that this keeps happening!

edit: here is a HJT log that may help in diagnosing this problem

i have checked Event Viewer and the only entries in red (Errors with white exclamations on a red background) are pointing to MSN Messenger. though i don't know what this has to do with anything

continuing to look through Event Viewer i found this entry, which happened prior to upgrading to the 175.19 drivers (i only checked the Error and Warning Event Types under Administrative Events, and Application Log Name under Log Summary):

Quote:
The NVIDIA Display Driver Service service depends on the nvlddmkm service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
another two entries relating to i think one or both HDDs:

Quote:
Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

DETAIL -

an entry relating to TCP/IP:

Quote:
TCP/IP failed to establish an outgoing connection because the selected local endpoint was recently used to connect to the same remote endpoint. This error typically occurs when outgoing connections are opened and closed at a high rate, causing all available local ports to be used and forcing TCP/IP to reuse a local port for an outgoing connection. To minimize the risk of data corruption, the TCP/IP standard requires a minimum time period to elapse between successive connections from a given local endpoint to a given remote endpoint.

It would help if you listed the exact specs on the system you are working on; ie make and model of board, brand and wattage of pw supply, etc.

No one knows if the system you are working on is the one in your sig.

Have you uninstalled the new video driver and tried with an older driver?

i turned on my computer today and got the following BSOD:

BAD_POOL_CALLER with a stop code of 0x000000C2. so i reboot, and again the same BSOD with the same stop code. so i rebooted again thinking 3rd time's the charm and i have managed to get back into Windows (XP).
i have done a quick search and the majority of people that have this error it was to do with bad RAM. the strange thing is this was right after i took out the extra 2gig that i upgraded to around 2 months ago. so i am now running on 2gig again.
the other problem could be a corrupted Windows install as stated on another forum:

http://help.wugnet.com/windows/BAD_P...ict565114.html

Quote:
See if this helps:

To fix the "windows\system32\config\system file is mising or corrupt" where
Xp wont boot:

Go to Recovery Console and type:

cd system32\config
ren system system.old
ren system.alt systemalt.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system
copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system
exit

Recover from a Corrupted Registry Preventing Win XP from Starting
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q307545
but i didn't receive any error about the registry.

should i bother testing my RAM again?
i am thinking that i will return the extra 2gig to the place of purchase and get a refund or exchange and get a different brand and replace it with that. taking out the current 2gig of course, as i think mixing brands is bad, the same as mixing different types of batteries!

edit: i ran CCleaner and upon rebooting i got the BAD_POOL_CALLER with a stop code of 0x000000C2 again, so i rebooted and now i am back in Windows again. what is the cause of this?!?!?

OK, I checked the asus site. What bios are you using? You need bios 603 or later to fully support your cpu. Next the only apacer ram listed is for a 667ddr2 NOT 800ddr2. I would really stick to ram that is on the qvl list; it has been tested and found to work. Here is a link to the qvl list.

the BIOS version is 0603.

so if i get 667DDR2 then the BSODs should be gone, right?
they didn't tell me that DDR2800 wasn't the correct match for my mobo. though i should have asked, but regardless i need to take it back and get it exchanged.

Whether you see it or not is irrelevant. When you use ram that is not on the list, you in effect become a tester.
Next have you checked what vdimm [ram voltage] your ram uses? The board will default to 1.8V. If your ram uses say 2.0V, then you will get errors.
I am not saying for sure the ram is causing your problem however it may be and since you are using untested ram, it is the first place I would look.

Next I would use asus probe and post your voltages.

yes the voltage is at 1.8v. i have not changed that at all. i don't mess with those settings, since i am not that knowledgeable yet.
i had severe issues with Asus Probe when i first installed it, it seems to be bugged so i will not be using that again, however i use CPU-Z to check the RAM settings.

will the place of purchase exchange for the correct RAM? it's still under warranty so i see no reason why they shouldn't.

You will have to ask whomever sold you the ram.
Next what I mean is what vdimm does that ram require? I looked to find specs on it however I could not find any. Many high performance ram chips need a higher vdimm set in the bios. If you have a link to your exact ram, post it.

Again I am not saying your ram is at fault however I would at the very least check the required vdimm.

Next by voltages, I mean the 12V, 3.3V, and 5V rails for your system. You can check these in the bios OR you can download the latest version of asus probe and install that. Another option is speedfan. This will show your cpu temp AND your voltages.

ahh i have CPUID to check those.

12v is 12.04v
3.3v is 3.28v
5v is 5.06v

edit: i think these are the specs:

http://ap.apacer.com/ap/products/sea...E800&sStatus=A

it is the only one listed on there that matches what i have, 1GB sticks DDR2-800.

also i don't know what you mean by vdimm. i haven't heard that term used before.

Vdimm=voltage double inline memory module ie ram voltage. This is adjustable on any higher end board like an asus. The board defaults to a vdimm of 1.8V. This may or may not be what your ram needs. High performance ram often uses 2.0~ or so.

This is why you need to know what the specs are on your ram. When you attempt to fix a problem ie your error msg, it helps to eliminate as many things as possible. Then do the troubleshooting.

so where do i find out the specs of the RAM?
i looked in the motherboard manual but i don't know which section would contain information about the RAM voltage or specs.

edit: i checked the Asus site for my motherboard, not much info on there about RAM other than:

Quote:
4 x DIMM, max. 8GB, DDR2 1066*/800 / 667 MHz, non-ECC, un-buffered memory
Dual channel memory architecture
* The chipset officially supports the memory frequency up to DDR2 800MHz. Tuned by ASUS Super Memspeed Technology, this motherboard natively supports up to DDR2 1066MHz
Please refer to www.asus.com or user manual for Memory QVL.
source

edit again: i found something that i think might help...

in Everest Ultimate Edition in the Computer DMI section under Memory Controller it has the following:

Quote:
[ Memory Controller ]

Memory Controller Properties:
Error Detection Method - 64-bit ECC
Error Correction - None
Supported Memory Interleave - 1-Way
Current Memory Interleave - 1-Way
Supported Memory Types - DIMM
Supported Memory Voltages - 3.3V
Maximum Memory Module Size - 2048 MB
Memory Slots - 4
i have been trying to find the specifications for the RAM, but so far i haven't had any luck.
