Problem with obtaining Universal Audio Architecture driver in order to have sound
There's an X on my sound icon in my tray. I tried system restore, uninstalling, reinstalling the Realtek drivers, (I have a toshiba satellite laptop), reformatting the laptop but nothing has worked.

I'm pretty sure I need a copy of the Universal Audio Architechture drivers for Vista so I can install the Realtek drivers correctly. Anyone know where I can get these??

Thanks a ton

You don't need it for Vista, its always there.

What happens when you try to install the Realtek drivers? Are you using the latest Realtek HD drivers: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

Which Toshiba laptop do you have? Exact model number please.

Mmm, well it says No audio devices are installed.

I've installed all the latest drivers from realtek as well as toshiba support

Toshiba Satellite A205-s4617 is the exact model

I appreciate the help, I'm an IT guy as well and this one has alluded me but now it's a real problem.

Make sure to uninstall all the previous versions of the Realtek drivers before installing the new ones.

If you haven't already also install SP1 for Vista.

So, in Device Manager it shows it as not having a driver? Any other errors in Device Manager?

Yes, I've uninstalled all versions, SP1 is on, and since I uninstalled the sound drivers I don't even have a Sound and Video tab under Device Manager, no errors. There was an error under Optional (or whatever the extra devices tab was) Devices and it kept trying to install the drivers but could not locat them

That device that is trying to install is likely the Realtek HD Audio, make sure you don't cancel that wizard but tell Windows not to prompt about locating the driver anymore, that way it will be listed in Device Manager as an unknown multimedia device which is required for the Realtek drivers to install in most cases. Or/also make sure the audio is not disabled in the BIOS.

You should also download the Intel INF Update Utility to bring it up to the latest version as well as the video driver as the older drivers were problematic under Vista: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filt...=163&submit=Go!

Where do I find the audio under the BIOS, I looked under each tab and it wasn't there. I'm going to disable and uninstalled the High Definition Audio from System Devices, install the Realtek driver then reboot and see what happens, then i'll run that INF Update Utility and tell ya how it went

After rebooting it still says "Found New Hardware, windows needs to install driver software for your unknown device" and then under Unknown Devices in Device Manager, there are literally like 80 "Unknown Devices"

I'm really not sure what is going wrong there for you. Have you tried running the Realtek setup now that you've uninstalled the HD Audio device?

Few laptops actually have a setting to disable the audio, but it was worth checking anyway.

Yeah, I know it's crazy. Basically everytime I reboot it says that it found new hardware and it wants to install the drivers but it can't find them.

Yes, I ran the realtek setup after uninstalled the HD audio device, didn't help.

Is there a way I can disable the audio from starting in the BIOS and then install the driver?

I tried installing the driver by righ-clicking and selecting Add Legacy Hardware, and then selecting my driver to install. It installed under Sounds, Videos....

But there is now a question mark on the Realtek HD driver. It says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)."

You need the audio to be enabled and showing in Device Manager for the driver to install.

I guess there's a chance there's a hardware fault in the laptop if you've done everything right and even reformatted.
