unrecognised DVD/RW drive
I just installed a new ide DVD/RW drive, and it is correctly recognised when computer is booting, and when I log into windows, a message does appear saying that new hardware has been recognised and it correctly identifies the model.

But not only does it not automatically work without drivers, it also cant find drivers when i use the windows harware update wizard. Also, when trying to use the drivers i found for it on the SONY website, it doesnt proceed with installation and says "no matched drive detected".

On device manager, it appears with a question mark, and status is:
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

i'm using windows XP. The setup I used is two hard drives on primary cable, and the DVD as master on secondary. Just incase cable or IDE channel is faulty I now changed it to one hard drive on primary master and the DVD on primary slave: exact same problem.

By the way just to give some history which might be helpful... I initially had a drive which worked, but had to move it to another PC. I replaced it with CD drive that worked initially but stopped working after a while and had exact same problem as current drive. Since it was just a CD drive, I thought id replace it with a new DVD/RW anyway, and hoped problem would go away... evidently not.

What model is the drive? I'm not sure if this would help or not, but you could update the firmware.

actually... I think what I said are the drivers that I got from manufacturers site, is in fact a firmware update- and like i said that didnt work.

By the way its a SONY DRU-190A, but I doubt its anything to do with actual drive anwyay, cuz like I said i had same problem with another drive.

If you have the jumpers, try switching it to slave.

Have you tried Microsoft Update (click Custom, not Express)?

Thanks for the tips tacoman. I think I MIGHT have solved it. Had to find and manualy choose the cdrom.inf file from "windows/servicepack..." folder as the driver. so far CD drive works... hopefully when i install burning software etc, it'll work fully.
