Unhappy Solved: Speaker trouble
I've recently reformatted my computer and have just discovered that my speakers now don't work.

In Device Manager there's an uninstalled "multimedia audio controller" which I'm guessing is my speakers, but the wizard can't find the driver, and the speakers didn't come with an installation disk - I just plugged them in.

If I go in to Sounds and Audio Devices it tells me there are no devices, and everything is greyed out.

I've tried unplugging them and plugging them back in but that didn't fix it.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

You probably just need to get the drivers from your PC manufacturer. If you have a brand PC (HP, DELL, etc.) then go to their site and download the multimedia drivers for your model. If you have a home built pc with an onboard multimedia controller, go to the motherboard manufacturer's site and get the drivers from there.

Speakers do not need drivers, but your sound card, whether integrated to your motherboard or not.

How do I find out my model?

I know that sounds stupid, but my computer is no longer in it's original casing.

depending on your brand, you can right click on my computer (assuming windows), go to properties, and the initial tab of the window it pulls up might have the company and model name.
There is a small chance your mobo will be listed by name in the device manager.
If not, there are several small programs that will pull all the info all your system, check out here http://majorgeeks.com/downloads9.html . use at your own risk of course (i don't remember which i have used in the past, but i have never had problems).
absent that, the best way is to crack open your case and look for a model number.

Well, I went to the site of my make/model and went to their Utilities and Upgrades page, but could see anything about a soundcard. Am I missing it?

I also tried: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

go to www.belarc.com d/l and run the small free program. It will tell you everything on your computer, including model number, license keys etc. (I keep a copy printed off for use should the computer crash). You should be able to identify the audio controller then.

Thanks Vicks I'll look at that.

In the meantime, I googled and found a post on another board where someone had the same issue with the same make and model.

Anyway, to cut a LONG story short (let's just say it was an old post and therefore an old reply!) I ended up here:

http://www.radarsync.com/driver/d199...7_audio_device

This fixed it, although during the process it pops up telling you it hasn't passed the Windows Logo Testing and may not be compatible with XP but - rightly or wrongly! - I carried on and was prompted to restart. Once I'd done that I had sounds and everything's lovely again!

Thanks everyone for their help.
