Solved: RAID 1 question
RAID 1 is new to me but my computer with 2 -500 GB drives is going to be switched from RAID 0 to RAID 1 because one of the two drives failed and I lost everything. Here's the question:
I have read that typically this conversion if done by system software, but "hardware implementation" is strongly recommended instead. Specifically, what is required, a second (separate controller?) or what? What is meant by hardware implementation?. All answers appreciated.

"hardware implementation" basicly; means using a separate pci raid controller card as opposed to the motherboard option.
In my opinion RAID 1 is not really much use to the home user, its really designed for the office server where downtime is an issue.
The only redundancy RAID 1 has is mechanical failure, if one drive fails the other one can be up and running in minutes.
There is no redundancy against software corruption or virus attacks as both drives will be infected.
Remember RAID of any flavour is not BACKUP
