quick queston xp +sp3 +avg8 pro on a p4 2.4 1core +256 ram = system works like a 486?

it thing avg/ram is to blame ive uped the page file to 4 gigs, turned off herustics still experiacing a signifigant hit on recorces.... done on afresh clean install

if not there are other things is could be (compatability) but im in the wrong thread for that
so one step at a time

AVG does seem to use more resources and has a larger impact on system performance then AVG 7.5.

In your case the solution might be as simple as adding more RAM, 256MB is a low amount for Windows XP. I'd suggest adding a 512MB or 1GB module to the system to improve performance.

Agreed with Triple6.

256mb of RAM is barely enough to get by in Windows XP. You'll notice a massive increase in performance with an upgrade to 512mb or, as mentioned above, 1gb. 1gig of RAM seems to be the sweet spot for general Windows XP use.

thanks for the repies i was out back pulling apart a pile of old computers apart trying to find the right ram. i was hoping it was the case but i want sure avg would cripple it that badly, a bit of an eye opener, it could of been me other aps causing avg to be geting into a scaning loop but considering what i had installed but i doubted it ram is a good idea and ill arange to get some more for him i have some other questions as well but this isnt the right thread
