Solved: Odd USB behavious
Hi,

I have Acer 5920g laptop running on Vista Home Premium which has 4 USB ports. One of the located on the right side of the laptop and 3 on the left.

I use one on the right for my mouse. This is the problem. Sometimes mouse will stop working for no reason. Light will be off and it will look like there is no power delivered to it. Device manager will still show it...

When I plug the mouse in one of the ports on the left it works fine. The issue seem to be specific to the port on the right.

To fix it I have to remove all USB root hubs from the device manager and restart.

Any ideas how to fix this issue permanently?

I assume that if you leave the mouse in the left USB port that you have tested it for sometime to see if the same thing happens and it doesn't.

Have you tried something else in the right USB port for awhile to see if the same thing happens to that device?

I tried memory sticks and they work at that time.

Don't think that it would happen if I would leave my mouse in the left port. When I plug in my Microsoft Notebook Mouse in right port it is detected as HID complaint device, but when it is plugged on the left it is detected as IntelliPoint device (Ms mouse).

The Usb port on the right is placed on the motherboard in a different position for a reason I think........Just use the Port on the left for your mouse

I had the same problem for my mouse on a Toshiba Laptop

Hmmm I think it is a driver issue more than anything... Thanks Megabite.

Anybody have any other ideas?

Did you get a driver with the mouse?

Yes. Doesn't make any difference. Problem occurs with the drivers or without them installed...

I forgot to say. When the fault occurs windows show mouse in the device manager (HID) regardless to if it plugged in or not. When I remove that mouse from the device manager it will appear as soon as I will scan for changes...

How this helps.

Sounds more like maybe a conflict with something else....do you have devices plugged into the ports on the left all the time?

No. Just the mouse, but I think that the camera built in the lid is connected via hidden usb - it dissapered from list of devices when I remove the usb root hubs.

Have you check on Acer site under drivers for any new ones for that model.

http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.html

Also does your vista have Sp1 installed

Have you tried Disabling the touch pad

I have SP1 installed, but I had this problem before the release of SP1...

Driver wise I have all of them downloaded. Tried to reinstall chipset drivers etc.No luck. Touchpad should not be a problem - it is detected as PS/2.

Do you think that upgrading BIOS could help?

Yes Bios update may help...

Also your System files might be the problem ........that would mean reinstall them from scratch or an image file if you made one.

I will try to update BIOS... and let you know.

If this will not help I will have to reisntall Windows or get rid of it. I have copy of Vista Ultimate, Vista Home Premium and XP Pro... I can always go back to XP

I am using 2 mice. First one is quite old maybe 3 years and the other is around 6 months old.

Old one is an LG laptop mouse, newer one is Microsoft Notebook Mouse.
