PC boots with no display
I recently connected my HP Pavilion s7620.uk PC to a 32" HDTV, specifically the Sanyo CE32LD33-B, which has a maximum resolution of 1360x768. When Windows XP started up, the display defaulted to a resolution of 640x480. Naturally, I changed the resolution to the aforementioned without any problems. I had only tried this television to see what it would look like, so I switched off and unplugged the PC from the television after some web browsing.

The next day, I brought the PC into the same room and connected it up again, with the same setup as before. As before, Windows started with a resolution of 640x480. I thought this as strange, because my Ubuntu 8.04 installation went straight to 1360x768 after boot. I went into Display from Control Panel and selected 1360x768 as my resolution, then clicked Apply. The TV screen went blank, as before, but stayed blank for over 3 minutes. I was forced to turn off the PC by holding down the power button for 4 seconds.

Now, whenever I start up the PC, there is no display from the moment I press the power button. I've tried using the television, my usual monitor (which I use at 1280x768) and another monitor which is used for another desktop. I've also tried it with just the power, VGA and keyboard cables plugged in, to no avail. However, I know that Windows or Ubuntu is not at fault because Windows starts up automatically, playing the startup sound through the speakers.

Can anyone suggest anything that might have gone wrong? It doesn't even work on the TV now...

Not an expert on operating systems
My knowledge is more oriented towards hardware. However, I think you might want to start your fix by getting into Windows XP though "Safe Mode". Press the F8 key repeatedly while booting to get into it. Select safe boot, probably with networking. Then go into control panel and set the display back to the last good definition. We can talk about a permanent fix after you can see the screen. After selecting the last known good video definition, reboot.

Thanks for the help, but those steps didn't work. At this point I feel the need to emphasise that *I cannot see anything at all* - no POST, no HP boot logo and no GRUB boot loader, although I know that they are all running fine because I get into the BIOS and choose between Windows and Ubuntu (blindly).

Windows itself is working fine, it's just not giving an output. I used Narrator (who thought that it'd come in handy?) to get to Display, and the setting had again changed to 640x480. I changed it to both 800x600 and 1024x768, with no success.
