My dvd drive won't play dvds
I have a dell dimension 3000 with windows xp.

the a cd/dvd rom drive won't recognize DVDs despite my downloading dvd decryption software such as vlc media player. The drive makes noise like it is reading the disk but if i look at the drive through "my computer" it tells me to insert a disc. It recognizes and plays cds just fine but it will no longer recognise DVD movies or DVD-rom games.

And yes I am sure it is a DVD drive.

Oh my computer recently had a crash and all of the software and drivers had to be re-installed. Is it possible that its simply missing some sort of programming? and if so can i download it somewhere?

Those drivers are native to Windows so it really cannot be missing drivers. Dvd's and cd's use different lasers so what it really means is your drive is dying sorry to say. You could buy a cleaner and run one through but for a little more, you can buy a new drive also.
