Solved: IDE Controller Problem
I have a MRI IDE controller in my PC as my mobo only has 2 IDE slots. The IDE controller has a DVD RW and a DVD drive plugged into it. All has been working fine for months, but recently I've noticed that upon booting up the controller, "drive not found" for both dvd drives is displayed and then the PC boots as normal.

When Windows is loaded, both DVD drives are displayed and both work fine. The only problem that I seem to be getting from this is that I can't boot from the DVD drives.

I have an Abit AN52 motherboard and I've been into the bios and had a look at the booting sequence, its floppy, DVD RW, Hard Drive and when I try to boot from the Windows CD I get the error "Cannot load bootmgr".

Does anyone know what is causing this and how to fix it? Its clear both the controller and the drives are working as they are fine in windows, but if there ever comes a time when I need to boot from the CD, I'm going to be in trouble.

Any help appreciated.

Rach

how are the two drives jumpered (master, slave) take out the dvd rom and just keep the dvdrw at the end of the cable jumpered as master and see if there is still a problem?

You might have to put one of the DVD drives onto the motherboard connection for it to be bootable, what have you got on the 2 IDE connectors from the mobo now ?

What OS is on the disk that gives the "can't load bootmgr" error ?

I tried what replay said but that made no difference I'm afraid.

I'm very sure I've booted from the hard drive before so this is only a recent problem. I've got a 2 hard drives and a floppy drive.

If I try what you've said (booting from the hd) I'm quite sure that will work. But as I've said, I'm almost positive that this is a recent problem. I'm going to try and update the software for the IDE controller, as I'm wondering if this has been a problem since updating to vista SP1.

The OS in question is Vista, but I've also tried OSX. I guess I should really have tried XP.

I've managed to fix this problem now. Connected the hard drives to the ide controller and the dvd drives to the on board IDE connector.

Thanks
