Notebook Monitor Has A Line On It
My 17" Averatec notebook has a vertical thin white line about one third of the way from the right side of the screen top to bottom. When I move the monitor cover down a little, or up, the line fades and disappears . When I let go, it reappears. Could I have a short in the plug somewhere, or is the monitor dying? Any remedies other than replacing?
Thanks for any help.

Thank you for replying. I have visited that site for a replacement screen. I was hoping someone might know of a fix other than replacement, because of the peculiar way the line disappears when the lid is tilted. I figure if the pixels are truely shot why does the screen clear up when I begin to close the lid?

Thats sounding a bit like it might be cable or cable a connection but who knows. Is it still under warranty ?

Probably best to take it to a service agent and get a quote.

Notebook Monitor Has A Thin White Line On It
Unfortunately, it is not under warranty, but I appreciate your response. I was hoping that this might be something I could fix myself. I mean, common sense implys that a cable or plug of some sort might be loose. (?) The white line actually goes away and fills with the appropraite color when I begin to close the laptop. Strange.

So long as you weigh the odds of possible damage verses taking it to a service agent.
You could write the machine off if you get it wrong.

A few years ago I repaired my old IBM 600e. The back light inverter was gone and being an old machine I had nothing to loose.
I first searched the internet for a service or workshop manual. (include ".pdf" in your search) any eventually found one. This gave me a detailed description of how to dismantle my machine.
I then bought a second hand machine off "Trademe" (New Zealands equivalent of EBay)
I dismantled the second hand machine first and then my own machine and changed the inverter. Not really feeling confident the whole process took a couple of hours or more, but when powered back on she lit up nicely and has been going well ever since.

If you choose to go down this road take care and take your time. Some off the parts in there are very delicate.

Good luck

Notebook Monitor Has A Line On It
Thanks. Yes, it makes me a bit nervous to even think of doing it. I must weigh the odds.
I saw a pictorial on a site of how to replace a notebook screen. I thought maybe something might be loose. I think I'll video tape myself taking it apart. Pray.

PS: Its quite likely once you open the machine up that the problem will not be obvious so it could be a bit hit and miss as to what part, cable ribbon or reconnecter is causing the trouble.

Very good idea. I always take digi pics of anything tricky like this.
