I am pretty sure I have the right memory. It is called KTH-ZD7000/1G 200-Pin PC2700 (333Mhz) DDR SODIMM. According to the kingston website (and others) my laptop can take up to 2 GB (choices of 256K-512K-1G). It has one slot at the bottom and one below the keyboard. The model is Pavilion zv5000. The p/n is PJ883EA#B1A and below that it says zv5365EA. I can not find this specific as a model in the kingston website (it exists in HP website though) but for all the similar models starting with zv5xxxx, the corresponding memory provided from Kingston is the one I have bought.

For future reference, your notebook model is specifically zv5365EA from the zv5000 series. It's like buying a Toyota Camry but looking at the LE, SE, and XLE there are different features.

Anyways, the memory that you purchased is correct for that system @ PC2700 / 333 Mhz and your laptop can take 2 GB. I would normally look at the memory as the culprit here (considering that it is infact Kingston as well - bad) but you say the problem exists no matter which memory module you have in so I'm somewhat stumped.

Try and reset BIOS to factory defaults, and use the original memory in their original positions. See if you can get it to boot then.

Also, run the memory check I mentioned on each stick - meaning put in the 1 gb chip in by itself, boot to memtest and let it run on there, then the 512 on it's own, etc.

Sorry for giving duff info! You are correct, your laptop can take upto 2GB. I'm still at a loss though as to what has caused this problem.
The only other thing you could do would be to reset the bios like RogueSpear00 said.

P.S. RogueSpear00, I like your reference to the Toyota! LOL!

hehe - sometimes it's easier to explain when you relate things to non-technical jargon. I'm a Toyota fan anyhow lol

I tried so far the memory test with just the new memory plugged in and was successful (I has tried some days ago with also the 512K in the other slot asn was also successful).
I tried to load defualt settings at BIOS but nothing happened. I am thinking to reset the BIOS. I have downloaded the file wich is .exe. Do I copy it to a CD as it is, or I need to make an ISO bootable CD? If so I guess Nero would do this conversion...

I still havent solved the problem. But I am curious because twice I formatted the hard disk and reinstalled XP and seemed to work. I restarted couple of times and it was working. But both times when i restarted after a day or two, it could not start and XP were hanging. At least the second time there was no other SW installed at the laptop. I remind that the HD test was successful with no problems. Does this behavior give any hint for anything?

Try using ONLY the 1GB module. IF that works, then try ONLY the 512MB module, though remember you'll likely have to reset the BIOS (NOT update it). IF both work individually, then it might be a manufacturer guffaw where a 1GB module and 512MB module don't play well together. Alternatively, you could try switching into which banks you install the modules.
