Solved: Sound no longer working
Recently, I downloaded the program "Driver Magician" from GAOTD. The comments suggested it worked well, so I downloaded it without hesitation. The first driver I tested it on was a Sigmatel sound driver, but I forgot to back it up. After that, my computer reported that I had no sound driver/card, and the driver installed was having problems. I went to support.dell.com and installed the driver I need, but it still says that I need a card, even though the driver problems are gone.

My sound doesn't work in Ubuntu on the same computer, either. It's been broken for a few weeks now -- any suggestions?

What shows in System>Device Manager for the sound? Is the Sigmatel there? Is anything? Do you have an unidentified device?

So if you go to Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices, on the Audio tab, is the default device set to your Sigmatel?

And on the last tab, select your Sigmatel, click on the Properties button, then go to the Drivers tab. Does it list your Sigmatel or some other? If it's the wrong one, try using the Update Driver button, but when you go through the wizard, browse to your hard drive, when you reinstalled the sigmatel drivers it should have put a subdirectory on there with the extracted install stuff.

See if pointing to the right ones does it.

It says there are no playback devices.

Great! I found the driver I needed by searching around a little and now my sound is working again.
