USB port problem
I am normally quite good with solving any problems that occur with my computer, but this problem has given me great displeasure in atempting to solve, I had a problem with my hard drive and after a format and a few tweaks here and there and it worked fine, my problem is that now my computer is registering 6 usb ports when there are only 4, and my data sticks are not registering properly, they come up as an unknown/unrecognised device, although my usb wireless dongle is working perfectly fine. This is the first time I have had to resort to posting a help message, but i know when to ask for help, any help would be greatly appreciated, if any computer specs or info are required I will happily provide them

After you formatted the hard disk and installed the os, did you install your chipset drivers?
Normally you do an install in this order.
1 Install os
2 Update to latest service pack. For xp sp3 and for vista sp1
3 Install chipset/mb drivers
4 Install sound, nic drivers as necessary
5 Install video driver last
6 Make an image of a clean install to use if you need to reinstall at a later date
7 Do windows update and do ALL critical updates.

A few things you can do.
1 From device mgr, remove all usb ports and reboot. Let windows reinstall them.
2 I assume you downloaded the latest chipset driver rather than one from a motherboard CD. If this is NOT the case, install the latest chipset drivers.

sorry to revive the thread, i had a hard drive problem and have just replaced it, upon installing xp and relevent drivers (chipset etc) i am still experiencing this problem, i have had a cast about on google to try and find any updated drivers for my chipset (intel 852/855 gm/gme) but to no avail, i have tested all 3 of my data sticks in my main desktop computer and all 3 are working fine, i have also tested other usb devices in my laptop in all 4 ports, my phone, wireless dongle and my friends external hard drive, they all work fine and i have no problems at all using any of them, to complicate the problem when i first boot the computer and get into windows, if i plug in a data stick straight away it will work until i remove it, and it won't recognise any other data sticks if i add them in later while the first is plugged in and working. I have tried uninstalling all usb controllers in device manager and restarting with no results, this problem has my mind completely baffled
