Solved: Strange problem with not being able to open removable drives. Any ideas?
First off.... im running XP SP3 and have no other problems that i know of. Can't find any viruses when i scan with AVG. This just randomly happened.

Every time i plug in a removable device (USB stick, external HDD, etc) i get the autoplay dialogue box but when i click open folder to view files nothing happens. If i go to My Computer the device shows up as an empty folder instead of a drive...

If i double click the icon the loading timer shows but then does nothing. I can only access the files by right-clicking and clicking 'explore'. Everything looks fine in the disk manager.

Im confused, im usually pretty good with computers but this has me baffled, anyone seen anything like this and know what to do?

Thanks in advance

This is a very common problem, unfortunately I have no remembrance of how it's fixed! Someone else around here should, because I've seen this a lot.

Good to know that it's a common problem. I've searched Google for a solution, i can usually solve 99% of problems by searching but i can't find anything on this. I've searched allsorts like "removable drive not opening" "won't open on double click" etc. but ca't find any solutions.

I did have all my icons customised via TuneUp Utilities but have just reverted back to Windows default as i thought that could of been causing the problem but nothing has changed.

Anone else have any ideas???

Nothing fishy mate. My sister has one of those R4 thingys for her DS (I prefer abit more power in my consoles, i own a 360) and she asked me to put some of my music on the memory card, that's when i 1st noticed the problem.

Thanks for being so helpful though

PROBLEM SOLVED!

For anyone that wants to know for future problems. I went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Hardware\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion. Edit the "DevicePath" entry back to default of "%SystemRoot%inf"

Next goto C:\Windows\Inf and delete INFCACHE.1

Things seem fine now, thanks for everyones *help*

Want something done right, do it yourself!!!!!!!
