new ram wont let computer boot up
here is the issue-

i just put in 2 gb of ram(1gb x 2 slots). i had 512 mb total. after removing the 2 old ram cards and installing the 2 new ones the computer fails to boot up. so i put the old cards back in to look for a solution online which i am doing now.

here are the stats-

-computer is a sony pcv-rs 430g
-original ram is 2 x 256mb pc2700 ddr dimm
-new ram is 2 x 1gb pc2700 ddr dimm

any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks ahead of time

You're correct in that your computer supports up to 2048 MB of DDR PC2700 RAM.

Have you tried installing a 1024 MB stick in one slot and leaving a 256 MB stick in the other slot and seeing if your computer will start?

Switch the 1024 MB sticks in both slots, and through trial-and-error see if one of the 1024 MB sticks is possibly bad.

ok i just tried what you suggested and found that the computer does not recognize the new ram. when i start it with one old stick(256mb) and one new stick(1gb) only the old 256 is recognized. im stumped, i guess these just aren't the right sticks.

is there any other way to tell if these aren't the right ones?

Well check your board on a website and see what types of "approved" RAM it likes to use. The Ram you have might not work well with your motherboard. Also, there is the chance that both RAM sticks are bad.

Well don't trust crucial or even your own manual. I had the exact same problem as you did. I was trying to upgrade from 1-4GB of RAM my manual sold me I could upgrade to 4GB of soDIMM ram, and crucial also suggested that I upgrade to 4GB, but in reality I can only upgrade to 2GB, and others with the same computer model as mine have the same problem so yeah.

well there is a max ram compacity as well as there are ddr2-800 etc. the 800 is the spped the RAM runs at and some are not "compatiable" (they may have issues) with your motherboard.
