My problem is that whenever I try to open my hard drive with all my music, games etc. on it My computer completely locks up. So i open my computer, click my hard drive and it shows all the folders but both the keyboard and mouse no longer work.

My media drive is a 500gb sata drive, only about 4 months old.

You may want to clear out the drive and repartition and reformat it, especially if that was not done when you got it.

Is it now NTFS?

You could try chkdsk, but be sure all your files are backed up.

I completely wiped, formatted and everything when I got the hard drive. I can't back it up because I have 350gb of stuff, and it's my only hard drive that big. Also something I just discovered if i right click the start button then click explore i can browse it fine.

Can your files be accessed and are they all right when you use Explore?

Have you scanned with your AV and anti-malware apps?
