Cleaning the insides of a CRT monitor...
Hi,

I have an LG Flatron E700SH monitor. Its around three years old. I live in a dust-ridden area. The monitor has a lot of holes for ventilation and during the last three years, a lot of dust has accumulated inside it. And I mean it, a lot(caps) really.i've seen it through the holes with a flashlight.

Is cleaning a monitor from the inside advisable. it says in the manual that its not. what do the esteemed members of techguy think bout this?

Plz give me tips for this clean-up or point to relevant sites.(I searched google for "clean monitor inside" and it gave me results such as one for a dog screensaver where a dog cleans your monitor screen from the inside by licking it )

Thanx for reading this and thanx again if u r willing to help.

There are very high voltages present in the capacitors of CRT monitors that can kill you in a millisecond. The only thing I would attempt is to take a shop vac and blow air inside and then reverse it and suck up as much as possible. Obviously the CRT should be unplugged and cooled off first.

I second that there is enough voltage inside the crt monitor to kill you, leave it alone other than for whatever you can suck out without removing the casing.

Lifesavers...really...
Boy oh Boy,

Phew...Was that close to being electrocuted...milliseconds...my god .
its a revelation...this box sitting in front of me could be a killer..and I was feeling sorry for it for having dust in it . Well, one thing's for sure, this wanker's gonna cough till death with dust in it, before it lets me feel sorry for it again.

Now I understand why there are no screws outside the monitor. so that screw-happy onez like me can stay alive.

This one should be made a sticky in a monitor forum or something.

Thanks guys for saving a life.

PS: sorry E700SH, killer apart you display great pixels.

Now... I have had a CRT taken apart many a time. In any electronic device there is this risk and knowing how to avoid it is the key.

Not to mention you can discharge the entire thing if you know how. 99% of the time this would only be done for repairs with the proper tools. If you can get an air compressor you can blow a good part of the dust out.
