Doesn't matter--DMA needs to be enabled for everything-- this way it covers your hard disk and all other types of drives as well...otherwise the system will be seriously slowed down. You wouldn't notice it, if not enabled, until using large programs / files or because of being used to it already.

I 'think' Via provides your mobo drivers-- and it's easier because they only provide one package...

which only installs what's appropriate for your system

AND enables DMA(i hear automatically these days, used to be optional many moons ago).

If you want a quick and easy fix, install DriverMax...you don't even need to enroll, as requested during install process. It will detail and provide you with needed updates for ALL your hardware / peripherals. http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax/

PS at any rate do NOT take my word for it about your drivers being VIA...as well i haven't used their drivers in eons.

Wait, i'm on drugs...your drivers are Intel.

DriverMax will provide them for you.

In fact, that may be better:

1. Intel can make it hard to eventually gather all drivers needed.
2. Sometimes an update won't install on an older system, even though some portion of the updated driver package should(say for one of the bridges).

The aforementioned applies assuming you do not want to stay with the older versions provided by Dell.

IMO you won't go wrong with latest drivers-- despite all reseller warnings. It's often for CS cost reasons-- why have to field support requests when say, the updated driver install failure lies with mobo / chipset maker....

WinXP came with DMA disabled by default...to work with the most older systems way back when....it only came out right after win98 SE/ winME / win2K...there was still a lot of ancient / underwhelming hardware in widespread use.

Be careful about what and from where you install.

1. You either have to be very industrious and gather everything at Intel site..
2. Use DriverMax
3. Settle for Dell's older versions...

And actually, more important than latest Intel drivers is--

1. Enabling DMA
2. Did you update cd firmware thru Dell?
3. You are not able to burn with different disc types / brands.
4. If you burned before and not now...then burner laser may be toast.

At any rate, an unintentended benefit of all this may well be improved / faster system performance...so all the time spent has NOT been for naught.

I just remembered something by noticing Dell provided Sonic software:

SpywareGuard & SpywareBlocker-- if you have these installed...they 'used to' treat a part of the Sonic engine as malware...thus preventing burning(maybe other security apps do.... many of them do for years, despite repeated complaints / reports).

This is why it's de rigeur to provide as many bios, hardware, software, driver version / date details as possible.

Someone may remember something about a particular problem-- maybe a Bios upgrade needed a rollback..speaking of...do NOT overlook having the latest BIOS in place...

...but they may not go to the added trouble of first asking which version you have....

AND it will also help to know EXACTLY what fixes you apply, to avoid the classic Abbot & Costello routine....

Great work on your part-- you persevered with it until you hit paydirt!!

IFFF DMA was disabled for all, then we'll be able to say that good sometimes comes out of a bad situation-- you should notice a very marked performance improvement with all your data / number crunching & multimedia apps.

Under DIsk Drives in Device Manager, you should find an entry with letters and numbers standing for your hard disk model...somewhere in Properties..in one of the tabs...maybe Policies.... you can look for additional dma / performance settings...ensure your entire system gets that boost...

Would be nice if you could mark this thread SOLVED btw.

Good Luck.
