Unhappy Solved: I cant write cd's can someone help? i have a cdrw/dvd combo drive?
hi, i have a dell latitude d600, which had a cd rw/ dvd combo drive.
the problem is, i can not write cd's.
I have used wizard, also another burning program.

I recently reinstalled windows xp, im not sure if its due to that... ive never burnd a cd before so im not sure if it was working before i reinstalled xp.

In device manager it says the device is working properly. Can someone please help me out?

In XP you should be able to right click the files you want to burn, go to Send To and point to the CDRW drive.
Then, if you go into My Computer and open that CDRW drive, the short cut files should be there and you can Burn to CD.

Is this the method you used?

Hey, yep ive used that method aswall, a message cmes up

"Canot complete the cd writing wizard"
"there was an error in the writing process. the disk you have atempted to write is no longer usable"

Ive also downloaded other programs to write cds bt they dnt wrk to.

I recently formatted and reinstalled xp, the drivers did go missing i resolved that problem, im not sure if its because of that?

I canot write anything at all....

Sometimes winxp native cd burning interferes with others / other cd software installs do not take care of this. Disable it this way: Disable native CD burning in XP

Right- click CD in MyComputer, click Properties/Recording. Unselect "Enable CD recording on this drive."

You may need to re/overinstall your favorite cd app.

You may need to run Autopatcher Updater to fix anything missing / broken with your WinXP reinstall...among others it will offer to reinstall needed cd files.

If you need a good free alternative:

BurnAware Free

FinalBurner FREE

ImgBurn

InfraRecorder

DvdFab 5

CDBurnerXP Pro

One last thing to keep in mind-- i vaquely remember not being able to burn with either Easy, Roxio, or Nero...forget which....but was able to seamlessly burn with a couple of those free apps.

Good Luck.

Have you ensured in Device Manager nothing odd with cd drive?

What make and model is it?

You've tried burning within Explorer, Roxio, and another app(which?) with similar results?

You tried different types and brands of discs? And the discs in question work / can be burned to in other systems?

When you reinstalled XP, did you also update all your mobo & chipset drivers? And i don't mean thru Dell-- Intel and all your other component manufacturers have updated drivers and firmware not provided by Dell. This would also include your cd drive's firmware.

Try these two apps-- CD Check and IsoBuster, and tell us results...

1. Dell has an updated A103 firmware...which you can also get in a modded version here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_file.php?si...e=GCC4243N.ZIP

2. Let's eliminate some of the basics / ensure we're on the same page:

A. That LG drive can read dvd but only burn to cd...and can be picky about which kind of cd to boot.
żHave you been able to burn before on that same disc type before?
You may need to try different brands / types...the older & slower the format the better.

B. Burn at the slowest speed possible.

C. Ensure DMA mode is enabled: http://www.onthegosoft.com/dma_setting_nt.htm The latest drivers from Intel may automatically take care of that(may even be newer than the Intel version Dell provides) / winxp by default has dma disabled

D. Couple more things to try-- go here: http://209.85.173.132/search?q=cache...ient=firefox-a , scroll down to dfourthhorseman reply and try in order: #6(autopatcher includes this also), #3(can conflict), #8(don't dismiss this)

PS What i said about Roxio-- was just guessing it came bundled with lappie-- whatever came bundled-- Nero, Easy, etc. is what i meant.
