Power Problems?
I seriously don't know how to solve this one.

So I have a pretty good computer, custom built;
Abit mobo, NVIDIA GFX, 500W PSU, 250gb HD SATA, etc.

So I was downloading a fairly big file and so I left my computer on for about 20 hours or so.
And before I went to school I just put it in standby.

When I came back I resumed the standby and started using it (it was working fine) and suddenly the computer shut off.
I turned it on again and found that certain things weren't working; my internet was failing to connect, it wouldn't connect to my webcam, and so on.
I tried restarting but it wouldn't restart or shut down...it would just stay at the blue Windows Screen saying that the system was shutting down.
So I forced it to shut down by holding down the power button.
Now it won't turn on when I press the power button.
I tried holding the power button for an extended period of time...since this has worked before...but it still wouldn't turn on.
I also turned my PSU off and turned it on again.
The power connections on the inside of my computer are fine and everything.
I know the power button is working because the LEDs on my mobo go from "0.0" to "8.3" once I press the power button.

If it helps, I've actually never paid attention to those LEDs, they never made any sense...usually they just displayed "FF"...does the "8.3" mean something?

Please help! I need to video edit for a school project and edit for AM x YR and and and and....I want my computer back =(

If I understand you correctly, the machine does not power up, no fans, no POST, nothing. It that is the case, you have either a bad power supply, bad main board, bad processor or bad switch.

If you have access to another power supply, connect it and see if it makes a difference. If not, have yours tested, preferably under load.

If I were you I would not mention torrents here.

Yeah, nothing happens when I press the power button. But if I switch off the PSU after attempting to turn the computer on, the fans and the neon will turn on for a split second and then turn off.
I've had this problem before, but it kinda fixed itself >_<
How is it that it can be working one day and suddenly not work another?

I don't have an extra PSU, unfortunately, but what does "under load" mean?

And I didn't think that torrents always implied copyright infringement, but I changed it.

Hmm, sounds a bit of an odd one this. I would probably have a stab at it being either the PSU or the motherboard since you mention that your internet stopped working and the webcam, both of which I assume are connected to your motherboard.

I suppose it could also be a cable between your power button and the motherboard shorting out and causing problems. If you have a spare cable or can get one fairly cheap for testing purposes it would be worth doing .

I wish I had an extra Power SW cable T_T
But I'm pretty sure it's soemthing to do with the PSU...
More like something isn't right...not that something is defective...
I'm going to switch the Power Bar since it is kinda ghetto and I've had it fail to dsitribute power a couple times...I'll update with what happens...

~Hopefully something will >_<

I've got a dumpster sometimes filled with things that worked one day and didn't the next.

Yeah, but when that happens to me...it's just a minor problem and doesn't mean the thing is completely defective...I'm going to try to power cycle my PSU and see what happens.

You don't necessarily need a cable. You can disconnect the one you have at the main board and short those pins with a conductor of any sort. But, I think that is a waste of time and effort because you do get a response when you press the switch. That indicates the switch, itself, is good.

"under load" is while the power supply is having to produce/deliver power to something. The better power supply testers have a load resistor built in. Reason "under load" is better is that sometimes a power supply will show the correct voltage at all points; but, drop drastically when a load is applied. The cheap, cheap power supply testers don't place the unit it is testing, under a load.

A note about power supplies: I used cheap power supplies for many years until I learned a bad/cheap/poorly-built power supply could imitate all sorts of computer problems and sometimes can even ruin a good component. A lot of my problems went away when I decided to use better supplies. I would consider any power supply that has an on-line price of under $50 to be not necessarily reliable. There are exceptions, like a very good brand (Antec is what I use most) having a discontinued model.

I agree that you should eliminate all other possibilities before declaring something in need of $replacement$; but, based on your statements here, I think the power supply is the most likely cause of your problem. Take it out, take it to a local shop and have them test it. They probably won't even charge you if you have it out of the system.
