Smile Driver detective - 18 problematic drivers - please help! - the tears of frustration!
Hi all,

I have recently formatted my pc due to a virus, however my foresight isn't all that good and i didn't think about how i was going to get my hardware drivers back, you see my computer was given to me as a present by a computer programmer (who i no longer see) who built the pc himself, which is why there are no documents or backup / driver discs, only the xp disc was provided.

so now i have 18 (was 20 but i managed to find 2 of the drivers i needed online, woohoo!) 18 drivers missing or out-of-date. i downloaded belarc advisor to find out the makes and models of my hardware in the hope that it would be as easy as visiting the makes website and retrieving the drivers from there... i was horribly mistaken.

i now have driver detective which tells me exactly which drivers are missing or out-of-date, but i still have no idea how to get them all back. but one things for sure and that's that i won't be formatting my pc again any time soon!

for 2 days now ive been working on this problem with no result, so i havent just taken the easy way out and come straight here, and to be quite frank this problem is absolutly doing my head in now!

The computer still runs fine just extremely slowly and playing games on it is an absolute no-go! like counter-strike source one of the most unrequiring spec games in history is running at an average of about 7-9 fps now which not only is extremely frustrating but frankly unplayable!

i guess the most you kind people could do for me is if i give you a list of drivers that i need maybe you would know where to get certain ones from or links straight to the downloads etc.

so here they are:

IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers:
(2 of) - Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller

Other devices:
System Interrupt Controller - this one is missing completely!

Sound, video and game controllers:
Realtek High Definition Audio

System devices:
(12 of) - PCI standard host CPU bridge
(1 of) - PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge

Universal Serial Bus controllers:
(2 of) - VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller

totalling 19 problems consisting of 1 missing driver and 18 out-of-date ones.

I realise that not all of these problems are causing the helish lag and slow processes i'm recieving however it would be nice to have the peace of mind that all the drivers are fixed, on the other hand i would be extrememly unimaginably greatful if anyone can fix any of these problems for me! 2 days of aimless clicking and typing using only the powers of common sense didn't get me very far, time for a new alternative!

oh and by the way i'm just assuming the drivers are the problem you're the experts though, so I won't be upset if i've been barking up the wrong tree all along, i'll just be over the moon if this damn thing ever gets fixed! the wall beside me has been close to being introduced to my forehead many times over the past few days so please help!

please make your solutions as easy to understand as possible as (you've probably gathered) im a bit of a 'noob' when it comes to computers!

thanks for reading and thanks for any contributions!

Open the PC and identify the model of motherboard you have.

There will be a Make (manufacturer) and model number printed on the board somewhere, there will also be a revision number also (important), the rev number will be something like 1.0, 1.2, 2.0 or similar.

Post back what you find, then we can point you to the correct motherboard drivers.

Once these are installed, you can hunt down drivers for any add-in cards you have.

On a side note I would be interested to know if anyone has ever run Driver Detective and been told "All your drivers are up to date - there was was no need for you to have bought our product"

Mumbodog is of course spot on. Your best bet is to identify your hardware and download the drivers directly from the manufacturer's web site.

The manufacturers desire is for their hardware to work - Driver Detective's is to show you how clever their software is.

ok thanks a lot, is it just a case of a few screws to take the shell off? i know it probably varies from shell to shell, but mine looks like an aftermarket one... looks like something out of transformers! oh and i hope this makes you laugh but what does a motherboard look like? lol thanks again

ok, looking at what i think is the motherboard (there are 2 big chips and one i can see is my graphics card because it has radeon on it) the other has a huge fan in the way of it (which i'm gunna assume is my processor) what i think is the motherboard has ASUS printed on it. it also has a sticker saying A8V - VM SE and another tiny sticker next to that saying REV 1.00G and i managed to do all that without making myself part of the national grid clever pogody eh??

Go here http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us

in the upper left hand corner input the following exactly A8V-VM SE then select ALL for "select category" hit search info button, now click the search result link, then select you operating system XP, Vista ect.. hit search, it will return all your drivers and utilities for that motherboard

Almost there...
this potentially is the solution however being as annoying as a computer illiterate is i'm having yet more problems downloading the drivers, i followed your instructions and a list of drivers / utilities appeared, so i thought best place to start would be at the top, which was a bios driver, so i clicked it, it then opened a download window, i clicked save file but could only save it using win rar which i have no idea how to use and no idea why its on my pc. i tried my infamous common sense technique but that didn't work either; after the download it brought up a win rar window with 4 folders in it, so i highlighted them all, right clicked and selected 'extract to selected location', and chose desktop for simplicity however all 3 of the new icons on my desktop do nothing.

the first icon is named 'A8VSE702.ROM' and when i click it it says 'windows cannot open this file. it needs to know what program created it.

the second is named 'A8VSE702' which is a readme file that reads; A8V-VM SE BIOS 0702

1.Fixed Intel 82573E PCIE LAN card can just resume from S1 once.
2.Fixed CPU Vcore voltage low warning issue in PCProbe2.
3.Fixed some PCI cards can not work issue.

1. *×¥¿ Intel 82573E PCIE ¤A¤Óºô¸ô¥d¥u¯à±q S1 ¦^¨Ó¤@¦¸ªº°ÝÃD.
2. *×¥¿ CPU Vcore ¦b PCProbe 2 ¤U¹qÀ£¹L§Cĵ§iªº°ÝÃD.
3. *×¥¿¬Y¨Ç PCI ¥dµLªk¥¿±`¹B§@ªº°ÝÃD.

and the the third is named 'AFUDOS' which is what i would normally click to install a file. this just brings up what looks like an ms dos command prompt box (i think) but it quickly flashes up then goes away

is win rar a good program for extracting files? if not what is? or are there any programs i can use that automatically extract files and folders? or programs that don't need to extract at all? what do you use and is it simple?

by the way mumbodog thanks for your support up to now it hasn't gone unappreciated!

nearly there now if i can just find out how to use win rar or another program to download these drivers i should be away! final stretch hopefully!

Don't mess with the BIOS if you are unfamiliar with what it does! If it isn't broke don't fix it!!
You will want to install Chipset drivers, which are listed under "Others" , Also the Audio, LAN, and VGA drivers.

ok skipped the bios updates, and just downloaded the audio one, had to use winrar so used it to the best of my ability (i think i did it right) although, i have restarted my computer after installing the new realtek audio driver and on returning to the asus website to get the next driver on the list i see that the audio one still appears, is this because i haven't installed it properly or is it nothing to worry about?

also ive just proved how tatty the driver detective program really is, in a previous post i said i found the realtek audio driver and just the others are left, this is because i dl'd the driver and driver detective then told me my audio is up to date, now ive installled the audio driver from the asus site and apparantly it's now out of date again! i think i'm gonna trust the asus site over driver detective lol

just downloaded and installed all the utilities, except Make VIA RAID Driver Disk V5.01beta for Windows 2000/XP/XP 64bit.because when i tried to install it i realised you don't have to it's something to do with the floppy drive which i never use, so i've bunged it aside in a folder for safe keeping.

having trouble with the vga one now though, i click on the setup icon and it starts to install but 2 bars in it says 'setup was unable to complete the installation. check the process log in your windows directory for more details.'

also the 'ASUS PC Probe II V1.04.03 for Windows 2000/XP/2003 & 64bit XP/2003.' installed fine but i cant move it from my desktop it says its being used by another program. ill restart comp in a sec see if that sorts it.

one last thing theres a section on the asus site driver downloads called manual do i install those too?

thanks

The Asus website does not detect what drivers you have installed. It just shows all of the drivers for that motherboard. Make sure that you install the Chipset drivers listed under "Others" They are listed as VIA ChipSet HyperionPro Driver V507.

It mat well be useful to download the manual. The "Manual" download is the manual for th emotherboard, not to manually download everything
Worth getting as it will have the answer to most questions, and makes life a lot easier
