can't rename files on USB with mac

I am using a Mac OSX 10.4.11

Recently, all of a sudden I can't rename any of the files on my USB drives. Even after I transfer them to the desktop, I can't rename them there either. When I open up the window to view my USB contents, I can no longer close the window by going apple+W, nor can I do any other hotkey shortcuts.

Problem initially started trying to rename files off of a digital recording device, though it had not happened before with the same device, and is now a general problem for all external devices (my USB, external hard drive, etc.)

help please!
