Question Solved: Help buying graphics card
Hello All

I want to install graphics card in my system.

I generally don't play games. I use my machine for Word application, watching movies, listening to music etc.

My main intention of installing the card is because I want to run Vista on it.

My system configurations are

AMD Athelon 3000 processor 2 ghz.
Asus motherboard
1.5 GB DDR I Ram
160 GB SATA

I'm ready to spend 2500 Indian rupees

here are available options to choose from

http://computers.shop.ebay.in/items/...40QQ_sacatZ160

If you need more info. plz. tell me because I'm fresher.

Hi advshadab, Firstly if you want to run Vista you definately need to upgrade your RAM. 1.5GB of ddr1 just wont cut it.
Secondly can you post your specs for your motherboard, (serial number, model etc.), without that info we can't really determin what your system will support?

Vista's very memory-intensive; if I were you I would upgrade to 2GB too. Looking at the selection of graphics cards, 2500 rupees only leaves you with 2 choices: the 8400gs and 7600gt. I would probably go for the 8400GS. The one without a brand-name is made by Palit according to the description, and has 512mb compared to the XFX model, so go for that I guess...

Just go for the 8400.... you aren't doing gaming anyway....

DDR2 is the ram used by the graphics card. Has nothing to do with the RAM on your motherboard.

One thing you need to check for is whether your motherboard is AGP or PCI-e. AGP is rare these days so I doubt it.

Just to clarify, in your particular case:

Your motherboard has DDR ram. And the 8400GS has DDR2 ram, this will NOT cause conflict.

If you have an AGP motherboard, buy an AGP graphics card, but they are very hard to find in India.

If you have a PCI-e motherboard, buy a PCI-e graphics card. It's that simple.

I am using an nVidia 6600 much slower than either the 7600 or the 8400 and Win7 and Vista run fine on it.

Hey, if I've got it right, this is your motherboard:
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...nufacture=ASUS

...in which case it has an AGP slot. Therefore most of the graphics cards won't fit this board - you'll need an AGP graphics card. I could only find 2 cards on ebay:
http://computers.shop.ebay.in/items/...w=&_osacat=160

neither of which are great. Don't know how well an FX5200 would run Vista.

PCI is not the same as PCI-e.
My first recco would be to upgrade, in India AMD processors and more importanly the motherboards are going for very cheap. Intel motherboards for some reason tend to be more expensive.

If your mobo is the same as this one, then I am afraid all you can go for is the AGP graphics card.
