BIOS not reading HDD
Hello TSG,

dell xps400, 4gb ram, 2 hdds-1tb anda .5 gb, all updates and latest BIOS

i have 500 gb drive that i have had in this computer for quite some time-worked fine. i took it out when doing some troublshooting in another area. i have a 1 tb with OS as sata 0, i reinstalled the 500gb drive. i booted with knoppix, it saw the drive and driveletters.

the problem: i booted with bios the drive was not seen. i booted to windows and the drive was not seen.

since it was seen with knoppix i am confident in ruling out the sata cable being bent
or the drive being bad.

i am stumped. shouldn't the drive be recognized automatically?

thanks,

If you have two hard drives, try just booting with the 500gb one, and see if it is even detected then.

I would also do some searching around the manufactures website, and see if anyone else is having this problem.

larryboy,

the 500gb drive does not have an operating system on it.

one thing i did try is cahnge the setting from raid /ahci to raid/ ata,
windows recognized the hdd asked me to restart --i did -- and when the OS came back no drive was listed in my computer or device manager,

thanks,
craig

Solved.

i had returned the bios to default. the default for the sata drives was supposed to be on
yet they were all turned off except the 1tb drive. i guess they call that the sata controller.

anywaay still perplexed on how knoppix saw the drive.

back in business

thanks for all the help,
craig
