Are all of the files in the same format? If so, and if you can view some and not others, then some files are damaged and some not.

If the files you cannot view are in a different format, you may just not have the proper program set up on your system.

Frankly, you haven't given enough information. What is the file format of these pictures (the part of their names after the dot)? What file/picture viewing program(s) are you using to view them?

If the image files are .tga or .tiff then windows will not give you a preview, you will need to install some other software so that you can preview it, but I am sure you can look at it if you paste it into MS Paint.
Sorry but I'm not sure exactly what the problem is, I'm just sure that sometimes windows won't recognise it's own file types.. Sad huh

Well, if the file formats are the same, either some files are damaged and some not or maybe the viewer is having trouble with files over a certain size.

When you set Windows Explorer view preferences to "details", is there some common characteristic about the sizes of the files you cannot view that is common, such as all are the same size, or all are over or under a certain size?

Nope.. Some of the pictures that can't be viewed are under 100 KB while some are 1 MB.. It varies but I don't think size plays a part.. Oh and also, for some pictures I can view the thumbnails but when I click it for an enlarged view, it says "No preview available."

If these files are of varying sizes and all are the same format and all are being viewed in the same program, I conclude that some are damaged.

There are some utilities available that will attempt repairs (with varying success from file to file); but, I have no experience with them. I've just heard from time to time that such things are available.

I saw some files that had been recovered/repaired once and some contained no visible (to me) defects while some others had portions of the picture just plain gone.

Maybe you can find something like that in a Google search.
