The guy at the shop said my computer should be able to support it. Is there no other possibility anyone can think of?

Could be, but the 8400GS is a basic card and doesn't require a separate power connector, I think it would at least display something. I'm leaning toward a faulty card, possibly a faulty motherboard or slot.
