Smile Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
Could someone explain me the dual channel feature of RAM?
My computer has got a 2gb chip in channel A and 1gb in channel B.
While booting a message was displayed like..
"You do not have equal memory installed in channel A and channel B. for maximum memory performance use equal memory in both channels"

The motherboard is an intel D945GCNL.the intel website says it can hold only upto 2gb.but my PC is running ok with 3gb.
so is the dual channel feature unavailable now? is my system running at a lower performance than it should be?

Google is a good friend. Anyways, dual channel usually offers very little performance increase, however the benefit is there. Still, dropping 1 GB of RAM for dual channel operation might not be worth it, especially if you still have to buy a new stick of RAM.

Yes, your machine is running slower than it could.
In your other thread, you showed 2 different speeds of RAM. The faster has clocked itself down to run at the slower speed.

Your board uses two memory controllers. Since you have mismatched memory, you are only using one controller for both chips.

Next I believe the the 945 chipset will support up to 2gig per slot however intel most likely never tested that config. If you want to use an unapproved config, you are in effect a beta tester. It may work fine OR it may not.

guess i'll go with 3gb ram.come what may..it can't get all that bad in any case.
and i tried to go through the wikipedia article on dual channel architecture.couldn't make heads or tails out of it,even though i am a computer science engineering student .
if someone can further clarify on the topic-it wud b greatly appreciated.
